12 years for dismembering her body with a knife and a saw? Why is it when you kill a family member you get a light sentence. Also if there is a reason why you killed the person (expect for money) you get less time. It's like the Jury understands why they killed that person.

I guess if he had molested a bunch of elementary school girls he would've gotten a harsher sentence, I think that guy got 30 years. Both should be in for far longer than 12 years or 30 years. It's sad, because this sentence, 12 years, is for both murder AND dismemberment. If it had just been murdered, it would have probably been less. Oh yeah, especially if he showed "remorse". Japan's legal system must also be frustrating for some judges, because often they CAN'T give a stronger sentence because the law won't permit them to.

this fool should be dissected while still alive with his internal organs to go on sale and his brain put in a jar labeled "incredibly stupid". but no, he should not be a free man after 12 years.

Guys, there are about 120 million people in Japan. This kid commits this bizarre crime amongst this huge population of people and suddenly everyone is painting all the Japanese with the same brush, as if 10,000 other Japanese will suddenly flip out and go out and murder and then chop their little sister, brother or parents into small quivering lumps of sashimi. Japan is still an unbelievably safe country. Good to see everyone totally ignoring the situational basis for violent crime.

Gee what do the parents do?? Do they visit him in prison knowing that the he killed his sister (their daughter)?? Not a nice situation. But this dude got off pretty light....only 12 years for murder!!!!Judges should be made to front the media and justify the sentences they hand down??? Would it have been a different sentence if he had of murdered/dismembered a preschool child???

Concur with most here, 12 years is a bit odd for this heinous crime. But I do disagree with others that this is a Japan culture issue. Don't limit yourself to believe that this is systemic to Japan. It happens in other parts of the world as well.

The legal system should feel ashamed for issuing such a light sentence considering the brutality of the crime. But like I always say TIJ.....

    This is Japan :)

Welcome to Japan. If you commit a heinous crime, you get a slap on the wrist. If you drive drunk however, then you're in real trouble. 12 years for a brutal murder of his own sister. That is a joke. Minimum sentence should have been at least double that.

Why not death sentence for this heinous crime. For this type of crime one will never escape death sentence by beheading in public in Saudi Arabia.

Twelve years is disgustingly low. If the high court has ruled that he was fully competent, then that means he had full understanding of what he was doing. Even if he HADN'T been competent, and the "split personality" had somehow affected his actions, the original seven year sentence was EQUALLY ridiculous. The man should have been sent to an institution for most if not all of his life, not given seven years and then a walk. And he CERTAINLY shouldn't be allowed to go free after twelve years for brutally murdering and mutilating his own SISTER. My God, just thinking about it turns my stomach.

I'm with farhaan on this. I have no pity for murderers that excuse their murder with the other person pissed me off type of excuses. That just proves this person isn't stable enough to be trusted not to hurt others in the future. The guillotine should be brought back.

I would HATE to have this psychotic living next door in 12 years. Some people are not destined to live well outside mental facilities and this guy is a great example.

    He should swing.

The sentence is a reflection of Japan's sexist culture and it also reflects the idiotic idea of having judges that are not lawyers. It's like having a surgeon operate on you who never went to medical school. For there reason you get ruling as a child is not the son/daughter of a husband and wife beacuse the wife did not give birth to the child even though DNA and science says they are the biological parents. Or, that a baby is the child of the father if the ex-wife gave birth to the child within 9 months of a divorce regardless. Historically, in a culture where a daughter could be sent servitude or worse to support the family. A sentence of 12 year may seem a bit harsh. It was his sister after all not his brother and a younger one to boot. As for the parents, if he has multiple personalities, they must have done or let be done some nasty things to their son when he was young.
