Police in Funabashi, Chiba Prefecture, on Sunday arrested an 18-year-old man on suspicion of fatally stabbing his 23-year-old flatmate.

According to police, the suspect, a construction worker, stabbed Atsuki Sato in the stomach at their apartment at around 11:30 p.m. on Saturday, TBS reported. A female friend of Sato, who was present, called 110 and police rushed to the scene. Sato was taken to hospital where he died shortly after arrival.

Police said the suspect, who cannot be named because he is a minor, worked at the same company as Sato. The suspect was quoted as saying that Sato betrayed him.

If he's 18, and a minor, shouldn't he be called a 'boy' or 'child' and not 'a man'? I think the sole purpose of calling him a man and pointing out that he is a construction worker at 18 (and not an aspiring university student or would-be student) is to promote bias.

I'm not saying the guy is not a man in the physical or mental sense, and I think he should be tried as an adult, but the fact remains that by law he is still considered a child, and the fact that he is working at 18 is irrelevant.

I'm as curious as Smith as to why "man" was used in this case when in almost any other incident referred to on JT where someone under the age of 20 commits a crime, serious or otherwise, painstaking efforts are taken to refer to the suspect as a a boy or girl, or at minimum, a "minor." I suspect his socio-economic status has more to do with the language chosen to describe him than anything else, least of all strict and consistent editorial controls.

That makes three of us... Call him an "18 year old male" but try him like a man. He committed a murder, he's no "child"...

Cold rationale and tepid harmony don't mix.

He's a boy! But, he'll be a man by the time he gets out of prison. Hopefully, an old man!

I had to read again after I read all comments. Caption can use boy as boy is three letters like man. In murder case, the name should be prevailed.
