That is stupid.
It is legal to buy fireworks, and these are pretty basic substances. Its not a big deal. When someone buy some tons of them, it is suspicious, but I guess we speak about some kilos.
‘‘I’m interested in fireworks,’’ according to the police. That tad like him should be put into the ARMY for couple of years. 'PERHAPS HE WILL LIKE BULLETS FLYING AROUND HIS HEAD!'
Yeah! Fancy arresting someone for possessing those chemicals? One of them is a cheap 'n easy weed-killer. Anyone can buy them and the easily available ingredients to make explosives is vast. What's next? Banning iron and aluminium filings (thermite)?
I suppose he got nabbed because he showed his explosions on he inernet. Still! Unless we aren't being told the whole story this is a gross overreaction.
If he wanted to blow something up he should have gone to a farm. When I was a kid we used to buy old fertilizer from the soy bean farmers to blow stumps out of the ground. Ah ammonium nitrate, the fun we had.
Bored guy experimenting with explosives. Lovely. Another young guy with no grounding in reality.
If he was telling the truth, then how is interest in science not "grounded in reality"? It may be a little dangerous, but most science is! As long as he wasn't doing anything dangerous with them and actually doing controlled experiments, there should be no problem.
Those substances are easy to find and there are several many alternatives that do the same thing. Stupid that this was made a big enough issue for the national news. But in Japan, they are really scrounging it up I guess.
