Well well well, what have we here, now looks like the good old SDF is engaging in some shenanigans. Where's the outrage.

  • bebert at 07:53 AM JST - 23rd April

    I'm outraged. Not enough?

  • medievaltimes at 08:16 AM JST - 23rd April

Hey J public. Where are the protests? I thought you guys hated military criminals. Oh wait. It only applies to foreigners. Double standard.

  • newsboy at 09:09 AM JST - 23rd April

They should screen these people these people better.......

  • Fair dinkum! at 09:26 AM JST - 23rd April

There'll be no public outrage about this. There will be sympathy for the offenders. And, because they confessed their penalty will be minimal. Shame!

So what did these guys actually do? The article is short on detail.

USNinJapan2, don't blame Japanese for double standards when clearly a large part of the posters here show the same trait.

Still, you know my opinion about the military and the kind of people it attracts. Same in Japan, same in the US, same in my home country.

Yeah but the point is the stink people make about it if its foreign soldiers as opposed to japananese soldiers. i don't see any japanese protesting to get GSDF base out of the city, do you?

Japan needs to form a committee to make sure GSDF don't rape again in the future. They should also check out their screening process and figure out how rapists got into the military in the first place.

And how about a new JapanTodaycom poll question: Should GSDF live under a curfew?

Also the SOFA stipulates that during any such interrogation the accused has the right to have a USFJ representative(usually a JAG Officer) and/or an interpreter from the base.

As well it should, especially in light of the changes to the SOFA that allow for handover of U.S. military suspects in crimes like murder and rape prior to indictment.

As far as this case is concerned, my experience working around SDF members years ago was that they are sometimes scraps from the bottom of the barrel, just like some U.S. military members. Some good, some bad, and its not like this is different from many walks of life.

I think most Japanese people are so concerned with various economic and soical problems which impact their daily lives that they have little time to ponder crimes committed by a few SDF members.

People outrage? Can anyone please rationally explain to me why the public should be outraged? Did anyone else notice the absense of posters trying to defend these guys?

  • japanyesterday at 03:41 PM JST - 23rd April

i think there isnt anyone defending these guys because not many people on here are familair with the JSDF or know anyone associated with it. Why dont you go check out a forum where there are JSDF members/friends/dependents and see if there arent anyone defending this "crime"

People outrage? Can anyone please rationally explain to me why the public should be outraged?

In the past, whenever there was a crime by a member of the military, it got big news coverage and there were organized rallies/protests calling for strict punishment, a crackdown on discipline and even relocation of bases etc.

Except, these protests seem to happen only when the suspect/criminal is non-Japanese. Thus the double standard.

Suspects/criminals should be treated the same regardless of nationality or profession. A Spanish painter should be treated the same as a Japanese fighter pilot.
