GW - I'm sure there are at least a few million old Japanese who don't have tons of money in the bank, and most of them are not in a dangerous desperate sitauation.

I think Hatsuko Kitagawa here is probably a bit daft as well as aged. It is a sad case.

Well the company in which i worked in japan for two years, had 2 old ladies of her age employed to clean the offices and the wash rooms. I have seen elderly people cleaning the escalators in shopping malls or doing the same kind of jobs in schools and colleges. These kind of easy jobs are not very difficult to find. If they can do it why cant she. Make her starve and work for food even behind the bars.

Sad case this one. Personally speaking, I wouldn't live in poverty misery and depression. I would just take some pills and go off a little early.

In asian nations, they take more care of the elderly people and have more respect for them. In many families, the older ones live at home and the younger family members take care of them. In the west, when they are getting old, they are put in a nursing home where they are treated poorly and their children dont need to take care of them anymore.

Moderator: Readers, comparisons to other countries are not relevant.

Further to the the moderators comment - Nor is this post true! I don't know where this person comes up their info. The aged care facilities in Australia are among, if not the best in the world.

This old lady is just a nutcase and should be locked up and there are many more like her. Lets see how long it takes for the copy-cats to start a geriatric crime spree!

Dog - Um, you see that "Olympics" bar at the top of the page? Sheesh...

should you not be asking where her relatives are if any. Don't know about you but I'll be planning my retirement over the next 30 years or so. I'm sure I can say the same for all countries, but who knows what will happen in 30,40,50 years from now.

You guys need to grow some common sense. Being poor and hungry isn't an excuse for slashing someone with a knife. Breaking/stealing stuff is enough to lead to prison. No need to harm someone physically.

These moderators are "hen". I have had a post deleted because it was "off topic" : I was trying to find explanations to the social traits of Japan that lead to acts of desperation like the one of Mrs Kitagawa, so I was not writing her name in each and every sentence, neither was I discussing the type of blade she might have been using, nor the choice of Shibuya for the scene of the attack... Maybe they censored me because I engaged in a risky comparison of the philosophical and religious teachings with what I had called "western countries", and expanding the argumentation started by ProudKoreanGuy, taiko666 and nutsagain. This was "off topic" my friends !

This time I will make what they could read as a "comparison to other countries", citing the documented cases of elderly Japanese who -of course before they reach a level of poverty that could make them other Kitagawas'- choose to emigrate to Korea because they know that there they will be able to afford a decent living standard with moderate resources ; they also know (and they have confirmed it in interviews that I read in Asahi Shimbun months ago) that some persistence of traditional values in Korea will make them enjoy respect and support from the community. Reading this article in AS shook me as I would have thought that Korea was the last place were Japanese elders could find peace.

I agree there was no need for her to harm someone just to get arrested but maybe she tried for a longer sentencing.

  • GW at 10:58 AM JST - 24th August

I wouldnt be surprised if she has been caught shoplifting etc & just being released, but agree she cud have found another way to get arrested, how about go to the same stn same knife & just wave it around some & yell & scream, that wud wake the cops in koban & she cud have her own room starting in the koban in a few short minutes

If these people want to be arrested so bad... Why don't they just lob a brick through the window of a store or punch a copper in the face. Easy.

  • bushlover at 10:05 AM JST - 25th August

A woman this age is totally capable of inflicting damage on a Japanese cop. TokyoGas is right. This would really wake up the police force.. or have them whimpering in the corner afraid of people of all ages.

" If these people want to be arrested so bad... Why don't they just lob a brick through the window of a store or punch a copper in the face. Easy. "

...Or take stab him instead of young women. Same result, but much less unfair. I agree totally.

  • dennis0bauer at 03:24 PM JST - 25th August

Why always hurting people? steal a luis Vuiton bag or eat free meals at a 24H restaurant.

  • Orangeporange at 08:59 PM JST - 27th August
