CHIBA —

A 22-year-old night school student was arrested on Monday night for stabbing his 15-year-old classmate in a classroom. The victim sustained slight injuries to his side and arm.

According to police, the suspect, who has a history of psychiatric treatment, suddenly shouted and stabbed the victim in the classroom around 5:10 p.m. while they were playing cards. The suspect was quoted by police as saying, “I can’t remember what I did.”

  Considering all these crazy killing rampages going on, maybe in Japan there should be some type of psychiatric counseling requirement for students and employees. Because for some reason, a lot.... A LOT of loonies have been going around killing random people for no reason, there's no logic anymore. Killers used to have a motif, now.... it's .... O' Really? I killed him? Well that's "weird" because "I can't remember what I did."

  I'm glad the injuries weren't serious enough to result in death. That would be regrettable.

  As this is Japan, the quality of mental illness treatment is archaic at best.

  What was his psychiatric history? What was his diagnosis? What were his meds? Whose care was he under?

  I work in a junior high school, and there are some scary kids here that are obviously mentally ill but are still just put into normal classes with the rest of the kids

  They were night school students. My guess is they were in the classroom playing cards before their lessons began.

  Night school: A school held at night so those who have jobs can still finish high school or those who don't want to go to regular high school can still finish school. In more advanced nations it's called night school, too, but it would be a mistake to assume all night schools followed a pattern based in other countries.

  I, too, have seen some pretty scary students being shuffled through the Japanese education system when what they really need is some psychiatric care and attention. If it's obvious to me, it should be painfully obvious to native speakers of Japanese.

  What kind of night school is this anyway ? One for card-sharks ? Sorry folks, no adult supervision, students wasting time playing cards, 15 year old juveniles mixed with 22 year old adults...sounds pretty dodgy to me !

  Japanese night schools are places where students who have dropped out can go back and get their high school diplomas. It is for anyone who is passed the age of required education (beyond the third year of junior high school). The students are made up of completely various ages.

  as an undergrad in Japan, at a top uni for their standards, I've had many bizarre experiences with Japanese students. actually, one of my former classmates committed suicide last year and one of my lab mates hung himself in the school toilet a few years ago. I've also had 2 or 3 classmates that never ever spoke with anybody. and so on. actually, nowadays at the yearly medical check up, we have a small psychiatric evaluation: do you feel anger lately? do you feel like your life is worthless? have you ever thought about committing suicide lately? and the sort. I got out pretty depressed from there

  a 22 year old (a legal adult) and a 15 year old (still a minor) in the same class??? What the hell are they thinking! This is just an incident waiting to happen. I just have to wonder what kind of parents these students have, I am sure they must be some real winners, huh?

  I used to work for Nova. About 15 to 20% of the male students and about 5 to 10% of the female students were absolutely off their rockers. If there was a bunch of them together in the same cubicle it was really scary. At first I thought there was an unusually high proportion of nut-jobs in Japan, but then I learned the a hospital nearby was recommending psychiatric patients to take language classes.
