13 were victims of murder ... three died after being assaulted by relatives.

Anyone know the difference between being murdered and dying after being assaulted?

Japan should put up nursing homes so that elderly can live freely and not being assaulted by abusive relatives...

And this happens in a country where they actually have a holiday called respect of the aged day?

"Anyone know the difference between being murdered and dying after being assaulted?" The later would be termed manslaughter.

2020 "Anyone know the difference between being murdered and dying after being assaulted?" The later would be termed manslaughter. Now that would really depend on the intentions of the assailant now wouldn't it.

Notginger...it's just 27 people out of a population of 130 million.

Now I'm not disagreeing with you, but: "The number of reports received by local authorities about abuse of elderly people was 19,971, up 1,581." That adds a little perspective.

And I wonder if other countries even keep track of such statistics. Sure the elderly are mistreated everywhere, but what other country has had the need to even create a metrics to gauge it? So, without the ability to compare, I find it tough to try and keep it in perspective.

it's because nursing homes are EXTREMELY EXPENSIVE!!!! what they need is hiring overseas eldercare from Southeast Asia

Apparently the other 364 days are fair game

Report submitted, stored and ignored. So many problems in the open and known, this problem will also be swept under the carpet

  • maplesugar at 09:11 PM JST - 7th October

MeanRingo You can easily compare by Googling "elder abuse statistics", and you'll find that this problem is sadly widespread.

This is a very serious matter and something has to be done, NOW not TOMORROW. Where is the respect for elderly in this world? Young generations have to remember that one they will be in the same position, and I would like to be around and see what treatment they will get.

And no one has ever been assaulted in nursing homes? There is some pretty diturbing video footage of what care aids have done out there. Everything from sexual assualt, to robbery, to murder.

Notginger -- just for you I will change my statement from "Apparently being ELDERLY in Japan is hazardous to your health" to

Apparently being ELDERLY anywhere in the World is hazardous to your health!..is that better?

We the elderly are going to have to circle the wagons and start building and moving into communities and put big fences up and keep out the younger people...Oh wait we do that already in California it's called Leisure World (or as we call it "Seizure World"). Maybe this could be Japans answer to the elderly problem.

Yes nursing homes here are really expensive!! Something has GOT to change. The increasing number of elderly and the abuse that will take place if they continue to be taken care of by family will only get worse. My MIL will end up being a statistic if we are asked to take care of her!!

My neighbor has his mother (she's senile) living with him and his family. She is genki but is clueless. He often is out in the street with her screaming at her and it his own mother! I really feel sorry for both of them.

Of the 27 who died, 13 were victims of murder, four died in murder-suicide cases involving their relatives, seven died after relatives gave up caring for them and the remaining three died after being assaulted by relatives.

it is saddening to see news like this. have they forgotten about the words "love and care for family" and "compassion for the aged"?
