I'm going to point, again, to the driver's age and not his nationality. Most 18-year-olds do not have the experience or maturity to handle something like an automobile responsibly. This is true in ANY country. Couple this with all the action-adventure movies and TV shows out there where cars are flying hither and yon, and you have a culture of risk taking those kids find irresistable.
My thoughts go out to the nurse's families in light of this tragedy.

I think the Japanese in general lack of common sense, life is a big procedure manual for them. The 18-year old new driver was obviously panicking when he suddenly realised the traffic lights turned red. Being lack of discretion, he went straight to the on-coming car and let it be...

In the driving handbook it states " It is ok to drive if through a red light after 10 seconds." Do you understand now why Japanese people spend so much money in driving school ? All that training , hours, and money. And still this man can't drive. Saitama is number one for speeding wrecklessly.

What a tragedy. 3 lives lost and 1 damaged forever.

The guy made a mistake, he killed three people. Can anyone show some compassion for someone who has to live with this for the rest of his life?

"grafton at 10:38 AM JST - 2nd June A useless 18 year old idiot killed three very useful members of society. Yes even if you do don’t think much of the heath care in Japan nurses are always useful. But he is a minor so what is he likely to face by way of punishment? Whatever it is it will not be enough. This is just so sad & tragic."
And what would be "enough" for you? Some savage kind of torture would make you feel better and put everything right? And how are you in a position to say the 18yo guy who made the mistake is "useless." Have you never made a mistake?

My driving instructor, former marine, always said good drivers never have "accidents." We need to hold the driving schools responsible. Every time one of their grads breaks a law, they get fined, too! That'll teach them to spend all their time flirting with their driving students."
You're obviously a pervert, why should a driving instructor necessarily think of flirting with a student? Get some help. And Marines can't drive for sht, ok that might be bad navigation. They blow up their Hummers almost every day.

“Whatever it is it will not be enough.” To bring back three dead women.
“Have you never made a mistake?” I have never killed or even injured anybody with my car. Have you & are you feeling empathy? Perhaps you would like to explain why out of all the angry posts above you picked mine to comment on? This idiot went through a red light & ended up killing three people & you call that a “mistake”. Maybe if the price for idiocy were higher we would see less of it.

@squidinkling... no compassion at all for the young dude. Yes, it was a mistake and everybody of us makes mistakes. But if you do mistakes like this, then you have to stand for, what you have done. It's kind of involuntary manslaughter and so he will end in jail. hopefully...

You have any guarantees about that?

I have not hurt anyone via my driving. But we do kill many insects/butterflies while driving, drivers be aware of our own sins.
I used to work driving 200,000 km a year, that is a lot of harm to insects/butterflies and also to air via diesel fumes of my vehicle.
We must be ware of these things if we drive cars. The world belongs to all living beings big or small, what is our right to deny any human or any species, the right to live. Thousands die via accidents, what are we doing to reduce this rate?
In this case 3 nurses are victims.
I think all people should walk facing traffic flow, to be able ,to run way from reckless driver situations. Also driving license should be given, with strict standards. Today everyone has licenses and get them easy. Car makers push more cars, and more drivers are given license easily.
More high speed fast money making by society, without thought to consequences for society via more accidents.

what??? run away? where to? the wide and spacious footpaths that exist in Japan? these think happen in the blink of an eye and the typically narrow streets leave no room to escape...
this guy should get some prison time and then lose his drivers licence for life. This is a car dependent society, you can quite easily live your whole life here without a car.

This was near my home. I've crossed that intersection dozens of times. Scary to think that could have been me. So tragic for these nurses. I also go to Showa Hospital where they probably worked and the people there are always kind and professional. To think they lost their lives this way is almost unbearable.
