Police in Sakai, Osaka Prefecture, have arrested a 44-year-old man on suspicion of killing his 73-year-old mother at their home.

Fuji TV reported that a neighbor called 110 on Saturday after being unable to contact Hiroko Suzuki for a few days. Police found the woman's body near the entrance at around 10:30 a.m. She had been dead for some time and had stab wounds to her neck, back and arms.

Police said the suspect, Tomohisa Suzuki, was in the house and two bloodied knives were near the body. Suzuki was arrested on suspicion of murder but has remained silent, police said Sunday.

Police quoted relatives as saying that Suzuki had been receiving psychiatric treatment for an unspecified mental disorder for many years.

The victim was last seen alive when her eldest daughter visited her on Aug 24.

Another one. It's devastating to keep reading these kinds of stories. Japan needs to take mental illness much much much more seriously.

So they were living alone together, or was someone else living with them?

And if it was just the two of them, why is someone with a mental disorder allowed to live with a 73 yr old woman?
