what is with the current increase in vandalism? pent-up teenagers/ young adults going wild?

Yakuza warning.

Somebody ticked off at the city office? I mean if it is, it's reasonably understandable considering the way many if not most city office employee's treat their customers.

Kringis: yep, someone is sending a message to the city council that their contract bid needs serious attention. KKyushu yaks aren't shy about being visible.

I was certain someone would mention yakuza and like clockwork appeared as the second comment. It seems to be a knee-jerk reaction on this site.
This country really needs more surveillance cameras though. But vandalism on cars and personal property is still relatively rare which I love about this country.

No skin off their back. To the one(s) who did this, who do you think will pay for the new vehicles? Think before you act!

Yubaru,
I would have said this 20 years ago, but things have changed. City office employees are very polite and helpful these days.
In any case, who knows who it was or who they were trying to get back at?
Let's wait and see if more actual evidence pops up, shall we?

Not everyone has the same experiences, Japanese and foreigners alike.

They need cameras that actually function. My building parking lot has a few cameras, but if you take a second and look at them there are no cables attached anywhere. It's meant as a deterrent, and once people figure out that doesn't work, it doesn't.
In this case, though it does seem like a targeted event. Not sure if it's the yaks or people just pissed off about something else that has recently been passed at the City Hall in question.

I'd say these were just nutty teens BUT for the fact that it was obviously targeted at public officials. And we all know Japanese younglings couldn't care less about political machinations. It's yakuza.

The 50 last incidents, the yakuza were involved. The series of burnt cars we had in Osaka, the yakuza were behind. But we never know. That can always one guy that had stories with the City Hall, if he is very efficient....
Ours are wireless technology. The kanrinin's son could make superb screen-caps of the guy that vandalized the cars. It's an oyaji with a baseball cap and sunglasses. Then ? He is not caught. That said I'm grateful for these cameras as my gaijin mug is never suspected of anything again, the video clears me.

Somebody has it in for city hall.
I wouldn't have said yaks, there's other things they can do to send a clearer message, but who knows.

I guess the guy was angry......

While lots of parking might be able to get away with no security cameras, you would think it would be mandatory for a city hall parking lot.

Frustrated guy. 1 Tire slashed for every 400 yen you have to pay every time you need a stupid piece of useless paper....
