Police in Nagoya have arrested a 70-year-old man over the hit-and-run death of a 44-year-old man with his pickup truck.
According to police, Susumu Mori, a self-employed resident of Obu City, hit Katsuji Kawano at around 4:40 a.m. on Saturday, Sankei reported. After hitting Kawano, Mori kept going, dragging the victim for about 1.8 kilometers. He then left the scene.
Police said an eyewitness reported seeing a pickup truck dragging someone. Street surveillance camera footage and the damage to Mori's truck led to his arrest.
Mori is currently denying the charge, police said. He was quoted as saying, "I knew I hit something, but I didn’t know it was a person.”

“I knew I hit something, but I didn’t know it was a person.”
By the damage to Mori's kei truck, the victim was mere inches from his face.

Doesn't matter. He's old and will be released after an appropriate show of contrition. His insurance may have to pay the victim's family.

So, he knew he hit something, but kept on doing anyway? And how can he deny the charge when he LITERALLY did what he's being charged with? Deny knowing, fine. Deny doing what he obviously did, nope. Take away his license and throw him in prison. It'll be a life sentence, but it should be, really.

@smith
He's not denying that he hit the bloke. He's denying that he knowingly hit him and fled the scene.
Sounds nonsense, but it's a remote possibility.....

one possibility is he really can't see what was going on so loss of driving license then he will go on the dole.
if it was simple carelessness then that will be up to the courts

To hit and drag a man that distance is insane. Not stopping only shows he knew what he did and was trying to run away from responsibility.

Why no info on the victims condition? + the "I knew I hit something, but I didn’t know it was a person.” is just a automatic denial response .......1.8km give me a break.

I always stop when I hit something but maybe some people don't think it's necessary. Sad.

I think many here take their chances because the laws here are BS when it comes to who is at fault. For all we know Kawano was drunk and walked into the middle of the road suddenly. While in other countries, that would be taken into account. Here? 100% drivers fault so driver bolt hoping never to get caught. We see this with cycling accidents all the time here. Until the laws change about who is at fault, this will continue to happen and people will continue to die. RIP Kawano. What a horrific way to go.
