these cars didn't have alarms?
sicklittlemonkey at 01:21 PM JST - 22nd June
No doubt smashed by tadpoles falling from the sky.
benhur at 01:31 PM JST - 22nd June
bumblebee had a tantrum..

Do you? Toughened glass, often used for side and rear windows of cars, will shatter easily and quietly if you hit it near a corner with a sharp object.

Stonecoldsoba - how do you know that? ;-) Anyway, Hakodate is a port city - no doubt some booze-fuelled FOREIGN sailors going on a rampage....

Probably some kids throwing a baseball around.
terebiko at 01:46 PM JST - 22nd June
Smash and grab just like in the movies. Or perhaps it is a form of mailbox baseball?

75 cars ..
it's amazing how they escaped WITHOUT being noticed doing the process .. I mean if it takes at least 3 mins to rob a car it would take them at least 3 hrs to do the whole process :)
someones sleeping on the job huh ..

kyourin - more likely a few people (Japanese never do things alone), doing a few cars at the same time - smash and grab (30 seconds or so each car) be all over in less than 10 minutes...

could have been hail...
this almost sounds like a normal night in any big city in North America. About 20 years ago my car was one of over 60 cars that had their window(s) shot out one night by some kids with a pellet gun. They caught the punks but since they were minors there was not much done and I still had to pay the deductable to get the glass changed. Buggers!!!

this type of persistent behaviour is entirely consistent with those suffering from neurosis. the perpetrator is clearly acting out those frustrations against what they see to be the enemy. the police must check the criminal records of those who bear grudges against cars

Oh, my idyllic memories of Hakodate have forever been tainted.
rajakumar at 06:56 AM JST - 23rd June
Rage by youths against the richer car owners or may be due to many other issues of youths/youth gangs.

Three minutes? Nope. You go down the line, only put effort into things you can see and grab in that instant. I parked in a garage that got hit with a smash and grab once. My car and two others were spared because we had "alarms" in the cars. In my case the alarm was just a blinking light, but it was enough to make them move on to the next.
