Mom killing 3 month old son, 14 year old girl committing suicide, new born baby dumped in the river and now 85 years old woman's body found in garbage...all in a single day on single site.... Kanashii hontoni kanashii
What with funerals running into the hundreds of thousands of yen, I guess I'm suprised too that this doesn't happen more often, either.
From a cultural standpoint, what with Japanese traditions regarding Buddhism and Shintoism, to toss the body of your forebearer out like, well, like trash . . . That's just too cold for words.
And they say 'furriners' have problems understanding the intricacies of the Japanese garbage and recycling systems! Doesn't the daughter know the rules? Didn't she get the memo?
At least the local authorities in this case didn't take photos of the mother then drop them off at the home of the daughter with a letter asking the latter to come to local Ward office for a lesson in correct waste disposal.
Maybe the daughter thought she was doing good by not dumping her mother's body out in the woods or in a river but by thoughtfully wrapping her up nicely and putting her in a designated garbage site.
Mainichi says that Keiko Ishida was spotted hanging around the garbage dump, so maybe she had second thoughts or maybe she's just completely whacked out?

Given the cost of funerals I can't say I'm surprised. In fact I'm not sure why it doesn't happen more often.
