89-year-old man stabbed to death in Shimane

SHIMANE —

Police on Friday arrested a 45-year-old man for allegedly stabbing to death an 89-year-old man in Matsue, Shimane Prefecture, on Thursday morning.

According to police, the victim identified as Yoshi Tanaka, was stabbed in the chest with a kitchen knife during what police suspect was a botched mugging at around 6:30 a.m., TV Asahi reported. Tanaka was taken to hospital in an unconscious state and was pronounced dead at 3:30 p.m.

Investigators checked footage from nearby CCTV cameras and found images of the suspect, who has been identified as Masahiko Yamashita. Police took Yamashita in for questioning, at which point he reportedly confessed to the stabbing, TV Asahi reported. Yamashita has so far given no motive for the attack, police were quoted as saying.

Good Lord...what is wrong with people, an 89 year old man is feeble at best. I just wonder what the hell can a person be thinking when they attack the helpless...or anyone for that fact.

If he is guilty I hope they show no mercy just like he did.

    It"S ME

that's the point- they think it's an easy target. Hobbling around with back ache recently, it occurred to me that I wouldn't walk around the streets of some western cities looking vulnerable. Shimane, on the other hand??

I'm in my forties retired mil...a gaigin in Toshima -ku Tokyo...and the other night as I was walking down the street I saw two Japanese young men sitting on the guard rail in front of a restaurant as I approached by them they started mean mugging me like they were going to do something. ( this has happened before) I said to my self I hope these two don't trip, cause I will put them in them in ghostland. But then I thought if I do that ...the keystones would put me in the mix. What's a gaigin to do? I've reported similar incidences to the keystones, and the US embassy and Base intel and was told that unless they actually hit you, you cant do nothing, and if they attack you, you are suppose to call your area police. wait a minute! I'm not going to let such perps put their hand on me or otherwise! Especially if I'm minding my own business. Once I went to a koban and got the run around , they told me that I did not live in their jurisdiction, and referred me to another koban who told me the same, finally i went to the keystone station near my residence to find the right koban..that's BS! Please Advise!

    "Shimane is very dangerous nowadays"

Statistically, no, that isn't true. Shimane is a fairly quiet place and this kind of violence doesn't happen.

What a scum attacking an elderly man like this. If this guy is actually guilt, i hope they same thing happens to him. Like one posted said, he should be shown no mercy just as he did.

Tamesu San Bro don't worry about these little punks too much cus they are sitting around in every corner. What Elbuda said is correct, show them an ounce of weakness or if they think you're scared or something, they group up on you.

Remember these guys here always smack in groups, not solo. Best is to always hold your composure and just keep going whereever you are. They'l try and break your spirit with crap talk, don't take too much heed.

If they say something very silly like something about your girl or wife, tell them STFU. If they ball with you physically, handle them right there.

Don't go running to the cops, i tell you now they are no help really. They will want to know more about you, who are you and what are you doing here in Japan - rather than your actual problem. Unfair i know but that's just the way it goes over here.

Just make sure you handle the situation well but be sure to get hit first, you got a reason to self defense and take out the garbage. Stay safe man!

Err, the kind of violence that has just happened you mean? The kind of violence that has just happened, doesn't happen? Right, got you. You could be a spokesperson for TEPCO!

Just kidding man, but seriously there haven't been any other stabbing murders or post office robberies anywhere else in Japan this week.... Shimane is not a very safety prefecture..

    Oikiwa,

"but seriously there haven't been any other stabbing murders or post office robberies anywhere else in Japan this week"

What a staggeringly incomprehensible argument for labelling an entire prefecture "dangerous." So if a robbery and murder happen to occur in Fukui-ken next week, will it usurp Shimane's "dangerous" crown? How absurd.

You know why stuff like this makes the news? Because it's news, i.e., not something that normally happens.

When I look at the statistics for crime in Shimane Prefecture versus crime in, say, Hiroshima Prefecture, and see that there is one committed for every 145 population in Hiroshima, versus one for every 220 in Shimane, and place that against my personal experiences over the past 10 years of living and working in the Shimane area, I can only surmise you haven't the foggiest idea what you're talking about.

Two articles found on a Japan news website do not an informed opinion make. And to so very clearly do so makes you look profoundly silly, to say the least. Next time, probe a little deeper before issuing Chicken Little pronouncements that aren't supported by the facts.

Maligning an entire prefecture with off-the-cuff statements doesn't tickle my funny bone, no.

    LFRAgain.

Dude. Come on. Do you know how irony and sarcasm are used? I'll explain my first comment if you really want me to but I would have thought you could have figured it out for yourself. I think most people did, it's you who's looking a bit silly.

    LFRAgain

    oikawa,

Well, yes, actually, I do understand sarcasm and irony. But I confess to seeing very little of either in your first post. My bad. Perhaps it was too subtle for me.

  • 0

    soldave

Al Stewart - The police are saying he has confessed... whether that is the case is maybe up for debate. Maybe that's what it's getting at.

  • 0

    oikawa

LFRAgain Sorry if it was too subtle, it is difficult to convey them exactly as one wants to in text form, but the point was exactly as you said almost, Shimane is of course not at all known for being a dangerous place, so sarcastically accusing it of being "dangerous nowadays" I thought obviously alluded to that fact, highlighting the fact that these recent events are actually the exception, not the norm.

    Oikawa,

No harm, no foul. Sarcasm tends to not translate well in cyberspace. And it doesn't help when I'm in an argumentative mood to begin with. Apologies for jumping all over you for nothing.
