Abused cats found in Chiba park

The cats have already been treated by a veterinarian and are currently in good condition, authorities said.

This. Is this true? have they returned them to the park, will they try to find homes for them, have they contcted an animal welfare group to take them in, or will they leave them to the mercies of the local govt. gas chambers?

If not the latter, then huzzah!

I hope they catch the vicious sod who's doing this.

It starts with "cruelty to animals" and ends up with cruelty to humans...

I've got an idea. How about removing all the stray cats from the park? I've been to this park a few times. It's a very large park and there are literally hundreds of strays in it.

I would love to have a cat, I can't afford the silly pet store prices, though. Why anyone would hurt a cat or indeed any animal is completely beyond me.

Seems the cats have more right to be there than the people then, since they live there.

Why do you need to go to a pet store? There are hundreds of cats needing homes in shelters, at the hokensho, in parks, etc. that you can have for free. Cats vary much less by breed than dogs do, so if you just want a good pet, buying a purebred cat from a pet store is a pointless waste of money.

Hundred are put to sleep everyday, you can get one for free from an animal rescue if your in Kansai its called ARK. Save a life get a cat.

It is a good idea from someone who knows the place. Who would downvote this? Appears to me that some people posting above think it is perfectly fine for strays to just have the run of the place. It is perfectly fine. What is the big deal?

Pets are expensive. They require responsibility and proper care. They require proper food, shelter, and medical care. If that is not being provided, they quickly become a nuisance in about every way they could be. I am particularly bothered about the way they destroy wildlife and spread disease and parasites.

I am going to say it. Animal strays are animal cruelty, period. Strays are happy being feral? They starve. They freeze. They are being predated by larger animals or sadistic humans. If people are not going to be responsible and care for them individually, then society has a responsibility to animals and to humans. It appears that the default is killing them. And if society can't do better than that, then at least it is better than letting them loose in filth to reproduce. There is no way there would be hundreds of cats in that park if people were not giving them food on a daily basis.

But is anybody cleaning up the cat poop? Are kids playing in cat urine-soaked sand and equipment?

A society that lacks personal responsibility and punishes personal initiative will not be able to stop depraved people from abusing these animals. And judging from some of the posts above, that is just how society wants things to be.

Exactly the kind of thinking in the mind of the cruel and sad excuse for a human being. that committed theses wicked acts.

All those are trouble the cats could have got into on their own, without humans involved (except the act of throwing glue away).

Anyone who recommends gathering up the stays and killing them, has no idea of how they are killed, and no consideration of the alternatives.

What we need is government-led and -funded TNR programmes. TNR = Trap - Neuter - Return. Within a few generations it will cut down hugely on the number of strays, without killing any of them in the savage way that is done now. The long-term effects far outweigh the short-term costs. Many local communities and individuals do this already,and it is generally supported by the local govts.

There are some people who would benefit from this as well. Like whoever is torturing cats.

What about removing the individual abusing the cats.

I will skip the "cruel to animals" part because I love animals. I just want to spend a few minutes alone with the man who did this. Just a few minutes would change his life!

Erin, why would you skip the cruel to animals part when this what this what this is all about? The law ought to deal with the aggressive side of your post. After all, he may well be a sick animal too. Sorry, your stance is little better, I am quite sure you would not have the means to deal with a 6" bastard. I know how you feel outraged as I do but we cannot and should never take the law into our own hands, or even suggest it. Take the case of a child molester, yep we all feel outrage and, disgust but should we deal with it? No, we leave retribution and punishment to the law. It's called civilised society.

Why is it only "potential abuse"? It's quite clearly abuse.

Maria, good posts. TNR works. It is being practiced at a park near me. the cats are fed by some locals and are happy and healthy and not increasing except for the occaisional new stray/abandoned cat. how anyone can abandon a pet is beyond me.

I didn't read through all the comments but there are cats to be adopted for free.

I saw a neighbour throwing stones at a cat this morning. I'm not sure whether there is anything I can do. Was the woman breaking any law? Can I report her to the police?
