Ambulance workers collar suspected robber in Shiga

SHIGA —

Ambulance workers on Sunday night caught a suspected thief while they were on their way to the house of an emergency patient in Hikone City, Shiga Prefecture. The suspect was handed over to police and the emergency patient was taken to hospital without any trouble, the fire department said.

According to police, the ambulance workers were approaching the patient’s house around 8:15 p.m. when they saw a man being chased by another man on the sidewalk. The ambulance staff grabbed the man fleeing, and learned that he had just robbed a restaurant of 170,000 yen by threatening staff with scissors. The man in pursuit was the 53-year-old owner of the restaurant, police said.

The suspect was turned over to police and the ambulance continued on with its mission.

I think it is rather irresponsible of the ambulance staff to get involved in this. What if the patient had died because of the delay?

Yes, but that wouldn't get you on front page, would it now? ;)

The headline should read 'caught' not 'arrested.' Plus, I hope the 'emergency' wasn't a real one with a heart attack victim on the ground in pain.

Yea, I kind of agree with smartacus on this. Unless they were relatively sure that the guy they were going to collect wasn't in danger or in pain or anything, which of course is unknown, they probably shouldn't have wasted time to "collar" the guy.

BTW why couldn't have somebody just snuck up behind the perp with a bottle (during the robbery) if all he had was scissors? People do it in the movies all the time..

They should have just mowed him down and carried on their merry way.

This was my first thought as well... a bit stupid really!

Don't restaurants have knives that surely ace out any pair of scissors?

That's not a knife. [Dundee draws a large Bowie knife] That's a knife.

I am all for civil responsibility, but shouldn`t they take care of their patient first?
