Aum fugitive likely taking taxis to avoid security cameras, police say

TOKYO —

Police said Tuesday that security camera footage shows wanted Aum Shinrikyo fugitive Katsuya Takahashi getting into a taxi at JR Kawasaki Station.

Police previously reported that Takahashi, 54, was last spotted by a Kawasaki city official after he was filmed by a security camera at around 2:30 p.m. on June 4. However, police now believe security camera footage indicates Takahashi took a taxi to Kawasaki Station later that day, NTV reported.

The camera did not capture the man’s face, but police believe the footage shows Takahashi getting into a taxi at the station, shortly after having purchased a wheeled duffel bag at a nearby store in Kawasaki.

Police believe that he took the taxi to the dormitory of the construction company he worked for to pack his belongings and flee.

Since then, the trail has gone cold. Police say Takahashi withdrew 2.38 million yen in cash from a credit association before fleeing and they believe he has been taking taxis to avoid security cameras at train and bus stations.

Police seem to get their tactics from watching CSI. This just shows that 5000 policeman can't catch 1 man.

Why is the police letting the fugitive know what little they know of his routine?!

... he has been taking taxis to avoid security cameras ...

Wait, aren't many taxis also equipped with cameras recently?

Takahashi took a taxi to Kawasaki Station later that day, NTV reported.

Ironic that one of the people who attempted to destroy this mode of transportation is now using the same to run from the law, and doing it quite well I might add.

By the way folks, there's a 10 million yen reward for the capture of this guy. i'm not sure of how it works in Japan but under common law, in order to collect a reward you have to a) be aware of the reward offer at the time you gave the info and b) claim it if the info leads to an arrest. In other words say " I'm doing this to help society AND FOR THE REWARD". So keep your eye open.

Seems like cops are three steps behind the whole way... And somehow leaking it to the press for the fourth step.

They may think they are doing their due diligence and reporting their efforts, but actually they're just putting on display their failures.

Prediction: He will turn himself in in the next few days. Nowhere to run, nowhere to hide, no more Aum fugitives to help him.

To risk going to the dormitory to get them, these belongings must be important.

The escape kit must surely contain false noses, shades, 'chon mage', big ears, a whole set of disguises!

Best days to avoid the cameras is on rainy days as long as you do not use a transparent plastic umbrella. But when the weather is fine, you might have to travel during daytime with sunglasses and a baseball hat. What the heck, live near Akihabara and dress like a cartoon character or one of those popo chans.

You don't need disguises in Japan. A lot of people wear masks (for allergies and colds) all year round without raising any suspicion. As long as he has the cash for living expenses, he can hide in plain site with just a mask and a hat for many years to come. What are the Jcops going to do?...ask every single person wearing a mask or hat to take it off?...They only do that to dark skinned gaijins, not Japanese people.

Mirai Hayashi. True! Maybe his escape kit is full of white masks. LOL

He is runing out of money and will not get many construction jobs, if he even tries to go after one now that the authorities are on to his latest lifestyle. Where do you start over at 54, and still support yourself? He proably should turn himself in and call it a retirement package with long term health care. He stretched out the 17 million yen pretty well, though.
