Police in Kawasaki, Kanagawa Prefecture, have arrested a 51-year-old woman after it was discovered that she had been physically abusing a five-month-old boy whom she had been babysitting.

According to police, Mitsuko Migawa repeatedly hit the child on the head causing swelling and bruising. TBS quoted police as saying the child's mother, who worked nights, noticed the bruises and installed a video camera in the home to see what was happening. The camera footage showed Migawa hitting her son's face.

Migawa, who was arrested on April 19, was quoted by police as saying, "I was simply trying to burp the baby, which is why I hit him like that."

That's bull..! No generation of women in Japan has been taught to hit a baby's head in order to make him burp. A couple of small taps on the back will always do the trick.

I was simply trying to burp the baby, which is why I hit him like that

well, you don't hit a baby's head when you're trying to burp him.. her excuse is dismissed.

Worse yet, according to the article, the babysitter hit the baby in the face. So, her excuse is really dismissed.

"burp?"

Seriously ... lock her up, throw away the key. When they find it again never let her around children ever, ever again.

Oh, yes! That is exactly how one burps a baby! Just smack them around the head until they burp! It works every time! Obviously, this woman is a professionally trained babysitter. Was she working for an agency?

“I was simply trying to burp the baby, which is why I hit him like that.”

Abusive babysitters becoming a trend in Japan? Glad I don't have kids...

Psycho. No other word for it

Japan really needs to set up an affordable childcare system with trained and licensed childcare providers. There seems to be lots of parents that work nights (and days of course) that require a safe place for their child.

You don't burp a baby by playing whack-a-mole. This lady is crazy.

They should try to burp the babysitter with her method.

Burp by hitting on the head??? Even when I burp myself I don't beat myself about the head and face, I gently tap my chest.

why take a job as a baby sitter if you dislike children?

Put her in jail. I can't forgive child abuse. Especially when they come up with dumb excuses.

I've never had a kid but I know from seeing parents that you place the child over your shoulder and gently "tap" the baby's back with the palm of your hand. You don't smack it in the face. She is simply making a stupid excuse, common sense says you need to be behind the "gas" and put it in the direction you want it to go.. so smacking the exit area??? Seriously. Throw this lady in jail for good.

If Abe wants more women to join the workforce, the government better have a method for strict background checks so that this kind of woman doesn't end up working for another childcare facility.

I have met women in college who had no idea how the birds and bees really worked... much less burping a baby. Still, I am left to marvel over where she got the idea that hitting a baby in the face in the way to stop it from burping.
