Where does it say that nobody did? At any rate, it's very easy to say "why did nobody take him down?", but if you had a 15 year old running at you with a kitchen knife, I bet that wouldn't be the first thought crossing your mind.
My first thought would be the old lifeguard training: throw row or go. Throw something at him, bust him with something, or try to take the knife away. Best to throw, as you're out of range of a knife.
I hope this 17-year-old gets some badly needed mental health support, can straighten out his mind and life, and live happily for the next 70 years or so. This one tragic incident shouldn't ruin his life, should it? He stabbed some people but none died. Give him some help, help him recover.
So what happens after they deem him not crazy? Does he go to a regular prison for his crimes? Does someone pay the families of the hurt individuals? I never hear about that part? Or is it that he is getting help and everything is done with now.
