Burglar steals Y10 mil during 2-year nationwide crime spree

TOKYO —

A 45-year-old man has been arrested for burglarizing dozens of homes and other properties across Japan over the course of a crime spree that lasted almost two years, police said Saturday.

The man, who has been named as Hirokimi Watanabe, is believed to have burglarized over 100 properties in eight prefectures. TV Asahi reported that Watanabe was finally arrested for a robbery that took place in Ibaraki in December in which he is believed to have broken into a house and stolen 75,000 yen.

Following his arrest, Watanabe was quoted by police as saying he needed money to live on and to send to his wife and son in Colombia. He is believed to have been stealing from properties, including in Fukushima, since around March 2011. In total, Watanabe is believed to have stolen cash and belongings worth an estimated 10 million yen, police said.

Where do they get these estimations from ?? Lost item reports ?? Like people don't take opportunities to throw a little extra on a report of missing items for insurance purposes ...Japanese don't lie cheat and steal remember ?? That gentleman took a big risk stealing at all with the amount of surveillance (hidden) these days I'm surprised he wasn't caught much earlier ....two years and over a 100 houses??? ...were these facts "extracted" out of him as well ?? I don't know ....there's a lot that could be said about this article ....readers digest

Wonder how he was caught and why the cops were so bad at catching him or perhaps they just lumped all the break and enters onto this one guy so they could clear the paperwork.

I agree Crazed, unless he had a specific signature to his way of steeling. Sounds to me like the J police are looking for an easy way to close a lot of I solved cases. And to the thieves that may have actually committed the crimes and still out there, looks like today is your lucky day.

Hirokimi Watanabe, is believed to have burglarized over 100 properties in eight prefectures.

So, there wasn't enough information to catch him after 50 burglaries and 4 prefectures? It took 50 more burglaries and 4 more prefectures to catch him. Just where is the story on the information that caused his arrested?

Over 100 properties and he gets caught, how? Can't even a hint be given in the story?
