Ok for all you pro-cannibus people, the quite simple reason reason that it isn't LEGAL and isn't going to be legal for quite a loooong time is this. People ABUSE it.

Incorrect. Cannabis was outlawed as a method of culling hemp production, at the behest of the cotton growers' lobby in the United States. The movement to have cannabis outlawed began in approx. 1906 in the cotton producing states. Once this law was enacted in the United States, it wasn't long until other countries were convinced to adopt similar policies under pressure from the USA.

This same industry is still fighting tooth and nail to keep hemp production hobbled because the fiber is superior to cotton, easier to grow and harvest, AND more cost-efficient as a crop.

If you have any doubts, then consider this - why would industrial hemp, which does not produce any form of drug (it's a different strain of the plant) still be under controls if controlling hemp fiber production was not an aim of these laws?

"Romulus3" why do you insult my countrymen? calm down and smoke some pot. ;)

"HonestDictator" something has not to be illegat for someone to abuse it Example; Alcohol, Gambling, Credit cards and so on.

And for all your god fearing people i quote the bible (or is it Cypress Hill?)

"i have given you all seed bearing plants to use" :)

    dennis0bauer; Great post?

These are a natural product, no chemicles or preservatives. Better than some of that packet Japanese food, full of junk, and sodium.

Heck; Are you the same Dennis that is friends with Steve the video game guy from the UK. I lost touch with him.

There are heaps of areas down here in Kyushu where cannabis could be grown out of sight....

    • not that its my thing - i know too many people from home that speak slowly etc for my liking

The real question here is what looks better in your back yard? A one foot tall Banzi Tree or an 8 foot tall Hemp.

Slow speech indicative of drugs? How about clear concise communication without a caffeine buzz. If these stories topics bring out the pot heads, can I read the crime section without being arrested as a criminal?

Masters at how others should do it should include yourself.

Hey - Marijuana sales is a one way ticket out or home.

This could be a problem area (topic) if society and law do not communicate effectively imo - Thanks for the story, actually decent reporting.

The Yakuza get their drug income mainly from crystal meth.

The police have a hard time busting Yakuza, so in Japan they go for the softer option to push up their drug clean-up figures, by pulling weed blowers. They put you in the slammer, use semi-torture methods on you, and force you to confess the names of everyone you have ever smoked with, and then your whole circle of friends gets inexorably pulled. Seen it happen to a close friend.

Not something to mess with, in the present mood and the state of Japanese laws. You wanna live in Japan? Don't touch it. You wanna smoke? Go to Thailand or somewhere, but clean your clothes before trying to come back through customs.

But then you'll find the seeds on every kitchen table in Japan, there in among the spices. Go figure...

The Cannabis Control Law bans possession or sale of the plant but does not cover Cannabis seeds, which are usually used as cooking spices or bird feed. Cannabis sells for around 5,000 yen per gram. Seeds are available via import dealers as well as the Net, costing about 1,000 yen per seed.

1000 yen / seed bird feed. That is some expensive bird feed. And everyone missed it in their comments. Someone in Japan is using 1000 yen / seed to feed birds can't u just feel it. That person is out there....

c'mon a little weed now and then is harmless. in fact, maybe that's what all modern societies need, an avenue for people to relax and reflect. alcohol just does the opposite.

why not afford everybody the right to grow one plant a year for their own private consumption. why do governments need to involve themselves in a matter that is none of their business.

Granted, if you do it too much, it zaps you of your ambition but a little now and then has some significant psychological benefits that I think this deranged world could use right now.

Its time to legalize it. Its way too expensive to fly to Europe right now.

dennis0bauer, try to side swipe stuff lately? People can abuse anything. Heck you can probably find a way to abuse a hammer if you do it right. I'm talking specifically the abuse of the type of cannibus that people intentionally abuse to get high, feel good about themselves, or w/e excuse to alter the mind with drugs. which your comment to Rom apparantly shows where your focus is, and it ain't about hemp clothing... Any excusable attempt to make it "right" as long as you can try to get it legal for recreational use huh?

  • HonestDictator at 07:24 AM JST - 6th August

Also cannibus affects health, some good some bad. Gambling and any other "addiction" like it is not really a health problem except you can file it under lack of mental discipline.

  • dennis0bauer at 03:52 PM JST - 7th August

hmm ever heard of alcohol and cigaretes, they are also addictive and bad for the health.

gambling and credit card not bad for your health who do you think the japanese go to for big loans, the yakuza, and if you miss a payment, then you suddenly fall off the stairs.

Nope i never smoked the stuff but most of my friends did back in Holland. I never liked too smoke and they banned space cake ,damn ;)

Cannabis in moderate dosis and used rarely is juat as healthy as a glass of wine.

There will always be people that cannot control their urges, but just saying it is because of the drugs is overdrawn. Canabis is not heroin or crack it is not instant addictive

In a country like Japan where land is a premium and many people are renters, it seems like a landlord's nightmare for such a substance to be legalized.

Pot is not good for your health either, also pot is illegal while the other two are not. Heck I always hated trying to have a sit down with heavy pot heads. They usually got lost, but that was another story. Now what were we talking about?LOL

Got to admit that was a good last line.
