Canned coffee thief rearrested after escaping police custody in handcuffs
YOKOHAMA —
Police said Saturday that they had recaptured a man who had escaped from them while handcuffed on Feb 3 after being picked up for allegedly stealing canned coffee and other items from the offices of a construction company in Yokohama.
According to police, the suspect—a 37-year-old interior design company employee—was spotted by a company employee stealing from the premises on Feb 3 and arrested on the spot. Immediately following his arrest, he fled from police while still in handcuffs.
“Times have been tough recently, so I stole some things from the office. After I was arrested, I panicked and escaped. A few days later I managed to break the handcuffs,” he was quoted by police after being rearrested in Chigasaki.

A few days in handcuffs got to be rough. Were they in the back or front? You can climb through them either way. He must have been fun to watch buying things in a store. Clerk, can you please reach my wallet?...............

"Times have been tough, so I decided to improve my life by going to jail for stealing things of very little value..." But how did the police let him get away while handcuffed?
