Since when was Fukuoka an island?! That's news to me.

  • biglittleman at 09:20 AM JST - 3rd September

I'm assuming the Fukuoka=island is metaphorical, right?

  • cleo at 09:33 AM JST - 3rd September

Fukuoka is in Kyushu which is an island, but a pretty big one. I suppose everywhere is an island if you take a wide enough view of things.

If I were going to sully my name for cash, it would have to be a darn sight more than 78 million.

Fukuoka must be a pretty big island since I live here and didn't know that -- LOL

So that's the reason I saw the TV crews in front of the Ogori police station.... they are responsible for Tachiarai also.

Chikuho Bank is not very big -- so that's probably a big chunk for them.

Hmm, 65 year old guy. Likely slaved his whole life. "Retirement" with petty cash nenkin is looming. This was his chance of having a good time for a couple of days, before being shipped of to the retirement home/butabako.

nice work buddy, but for a measly 72 million? if i'm gonna put myself in a position where I face prison time, it's gonna be for a whole lot more than that!

Probably worked for that company for over 40 years.

I wonder if this dude planned out his escape to another country.

I wonder if this dude planned out his escape to another country.

my sentiments exactly. The cops will probably arrest him at his apartment or mothers house.

    The accelerator jammed?

My theory is that this was a well planned hit, probably by yakuza.

1st, create a fake identity, fake history, everything.

2nd, get the job as driver. Get a second person to get the job as passenger.

3rd, wait for the right day and time.

Seems kind of lame to risk going to prison for that amount. I can't imagine that he can hide for that long. Fukuoka is an island, but you don't need a boat to get off as there is a big bridge that connects it to the rest of Japan.

  • HalcyonDaze at 12:38 PM JST - 3rd September

    Fukuoka is an island...

Why do people keep repeating that?!

As Cleo and others have already pointed out, Fukuoka is a city on the island of Kyushu which is connected to Honshu by the Kammon bridge as well as a tunnel for the shinkansen and a pedestrian tunnel. You used to be able to also walk across the bridge when it was first built but too many people were jumping off so they closed it to pedestrians.

So the guy has a few options there if he wants to "escape" to Honshu, not that it would probably help him much...

Go to Brazil, where there's a global heist club to hang and share stories. Plus many Japanese expats.

  • Feekalmatter at 09:40 PM JST - 3rd September

    Excellent heist...

  • mnemosyne23 at 10:40 PM JST - 3rd September

Um... quick question. Why the heck did the bank wait an hour and a half to call the police?
