officers had extracted “confessions” from four people who had nothing to do with the emails.

Extracted? What exactly does that mean? Were there phone books involved? No wonder the police have a high conviction rate.

Sounds like the hacker is doing a decent job. Hopefully the police will be able to gain a lot of skills and new knowledge from trying to hunt the hacker down in case a more serious hacker emerges.

Wasn't it just a few days ago that a cat was caught breaking into a jail trying to smuggle drugs and other prohibited articles? Gotta watch these cats nowadays! I say charge the feline and send it to court for questioning!

I have mixed feelings about this hacker. Yes, he may think he's doing good by exposing the worthlessness of forced confessions and the incompetence of the police cyber-crimes division, however he's doing so by taking real risks with people's lives, and with no responsibility at the end of the day if things don't go as he planned.

Because the police are idiots and one person can do all of this... I'm guessing the memory card contains nothing but a joke. The police here are an embarsement.

The four were released as the NPA chief issued a humiliating climbdown, acknowledging they had been the victims of a hacker, and promising his cyber-crime unit would brush up its skills.

This just shows are backward the Japanese police are, either they had no idea of what bot software can do or chose to ignore it so they could get an easy conviction.

Although the headline suggests the opposite it rathers seems the NPA still doesn't have a clue...

I wonder if there is an investigation underway regarding the "extraction" of confessions from four innocent people. This should be a wake-up call to the public as well to the Japanese government. I hope this situation is not going to be ignored.

Yes it must be humiliating to get caught on how Japan ends up with a 99% conviction rate . Held for several weeks ??? Extracted (forced) confessions ?? This is why it should be that police do their work before detaining suspects for any period and compile their evidence first that supports the claim they are making agains them( suspects) Shameful it is but quite rewarding to the public to actually catch the real culprits the JP !

    GW

Gee I wonder if the keystones who FORCED confessions have received any punishment, I mean they have been caught red handed jacking up innocents, certainly this is worthy of a few keystones being fired

Ahhhhhhh silly me sorry I forgot this is Japan!!!!!!!! The land of no responsibility if your govt, bureaucrat or a keystone, for shame!

Have a feeling this guy is never going to be caught unless he becomes unable to maintain his control and restraint as well as he has done so far. This guy is clearly full of pride and confidence and the police should thus consider deliberately issuing overtly provocative statements of personal affront to make him upset thereby begin to overdo whatever he is doing. Police actions particularly after their grave error in arresting the wrong people appear to have been meekly submissive if not spiritless which I feel is keeping this individual calm and careful.

    "The cops extracted... "

I think it means, the hacker hacked in and planted confessions in each of those ppl, which the police were finally able to extract? Thus freeing them from suspicion?

Never mind the cops' thinking, if only average ppl in general could accept that under present rules the cops are always FORCING COERCED confessions, and they should not be accepted as real.

    chocoglide

it's kind of scary how much pain and chaos a hacker can do then? people were coerced, humiliated the police force.the hacker is harmful & has a criminal mind then. i hope they could catch this guy fast.have you watched UNTRACEABLE? a good mystery movie....
