A 69-year-old former insurance company employee was arrested Wednesday on charges of fraud he allegedly committed six years ago, police revealed.
According to police, the man is accused of extorting ¥530,000 from an 80-year-old woman in December 2010 by deceiving her into paying for insurance coverage on behalf of her late mother-in-law. The man told the woman that her mother-in-law, who had just passed away, had applied for an insurance package she had not managed to pay for and demanding that the woman pay on her behalf, Sankei Shimbun reported. At the time, the man was in charge of the late mother-in-law’s other insurance plans.
The fraud was discovered when the woman’s tax attorney was sorting out her estate and felt suspicious regarding a payment for a nonexistent insurance package. He then contacted police, who tracked the man, who is now retired.
According to investigators, the man has denied any involvement in the case.

Why don't you write "former employee of an insurance company", or something instead of these clunky and unnatural direct translations of 会社員? In this case the job title does make kind of sense, but 90% of the articles could have people introduced as "a 32 yo man from wherever" rather than "32 years old company employee of a printing supplies limited liability company." when the article is about a guy crashing his car into a vending machine or getting arrested for snapping upskirt pics on the hibiya-line. Come on!
