Former sumo stablemaster Junichi Yamamoto, sentenced last week to six years in prison over physical abuse that led to the death of a 17-year-old wrestler, has requested severance pay from the Japan Sumo Association, sources familiar with the matter said Wednesday.

What a shameless MCP! 6 year-sentence is too lenient for him.

It would be in their best interests to pay off this chap. Who knows, with no other form of income, he might decide to write a hatchet job book when he gets out. Then again, he would probably have problems getting it published.

Considering the shame he brought to Sumo with this incident (not that it doesnt indicate an bigger underlying problem with hazing), I don't think he can really say he deserves it. They can say they want to spend the money rebuilding sumo's image...

Former Russian sumo wrestler Wakahono, who was fired last August after he was arrested for allegedly possessing marijuana, received 5.8 million yen in severance pay, but Wakakirin, who was dismissed in February also for marijuana possession, decided not to accept a payoff.

    OFF TOPIC!

The question, which needs to be answered before, if this is some money of a funds, where he had paid in before, of if it is more like an award?

Dear JT Headline Writer/Editor: the difference in what's suggested by "payoff" vs "severance pay" can completely twist the story. Just a vote for proper idiomatic use of English (Journalism 101?) and sticking to facts.

Is it true, that I can get 20 mil, too, if I beat someone to death? Or only if I am the person who responsible for his health and life? So where is the line?
