I say give them the death penalty and everybody is happy.
They should be given counseling from a psychologist instead.
Pathetic, people trying to suicide -in genral- , they just want us to pity them.Foolishness,we don't know who you are, Idiot.
Suicide is not something that should be treated in such a matter. most suicides are the result of depression, which is a psychological disorder, not a demand for attention.
For myself, I'm happier they failed. And I would much rather they receive counseling then say other lunatic suggestions of the death penalty. Suicide is a serious thing, I really think more needs to be done to address the issue, and having these people survive is a good thing. Life is too precious, even at its worst, to simply throw it away.
Japan really needs to rethink this whole mental illness thing. They need to get over this "It's a private, family thing" business and go see a psychiatrist that can help them.
I'm thinking we should put pro-psychiatrist messages in the media. Commercials, billboards. You know, like a picture of a suffering Japanese man with the caption "You don't have to face this alone" then a psychiatrists number. Import some psychiatrists from other countries, and train some at home, too. Start some grants for aspiring psychiatrists and give some nice and juicy benefits to those who already are. Start forcing attempted suicide victims to go.
Of course, this won't produce any sudden change.. but maybe the next generation, or the one after, we might start to see the suicide rate fall greatly.
Is this a new trend? I keep seeing more and more headlines like this one from Japan with the increased number of suicides. If they were dating, why in the world did they think that the next step in their relationship was a double suicide? Makes no sense to me... Is it supposed to be romantic or something?
I have seen an increase in ads about "depression" over the last 2 years, also a lot of "Mental health/Kokoro clinics" seem to have opened in the areas I visit. Try getting an appointment for a visit is tough though, always booked out.
One problem I see in Japan is that psychiatrists are not classed as medical doctors and thus cannot prescribe medication.
When I suffered I needed to go to a doctor that treated the physical side of the illness and prescribed me the anti-depressants, etc and than the psychiatrist(which charges a mint per consultation).
Interestingly enough a LOT if not the majority of the patients at my doctor(tri-lingual) were house-wifes and students.
Also in japan you cannot admit yourself to a mental hospital(Actually you can but it involves the cops).
It'll never stop in Japan, suicide has always been a part of their culture. Even with new western morals, I don't think it'll decrease because the western values and morals in addition to traditional ones will make it worse, it's more stress on people to try to live up to two sets of standards. Japans moving too fast and they also live life too fast, maybe if they slow down they won't feel like their lives are over so soon? I wouldn't even blame it on that though, I really think it's just a mental health issue. I bet a lot of them are just tired of the way Japanese society expects them to be, there is too much pressure to be what you can't be in Japan. It's sooo sad...
So clearly Westerners are moral and the Japanese aren't? That's a lot of bs. Anyway, Japanese culture as a whole does not revere or condone suicide it was the samurai and bushido. Historically, ordinary Japanese had little or nothing to do with suicide. Also, Eastern European nations have higher suicide rates than Japan and they have no history of suicide, in fact, as Christian countries suicide was explicitly condemned.
Society needs to do more to prevent suicides though by getting rid of bullying in schools and improving welfare for the elderly. Suicide is a very serious thing, almost always relating to a mental illness or a terminal illness.

Wow, I gotta say that's like, REALLY embarassing.
I mean, you try to commit suicide with the person you love in some poetic love story way and fail.
And then the police find you covered in sick and to top it off they arrest you and your partner for disruption of business.
Just... embarassing...

The moral of the story is: If you don't want to get arrested for attempted suicide make sure you succeed the first time. Keep it clean.
