The man is being held by the Tokyo Regional Immigration Bureau for overstaying his legally permitted period in Japan.

Is it a crime to overstay your visa if you've been in jail the whole time?

"There remains reasonable doubt." I don't know but I don't see it. The guy was carrying a loaded suitcase with drugs. What are they thinking????

They're probably thinking he was acquitted, why keep holding the guy.

They're holding him because he outstayed his visa, a separate offense. He outstayed his visa as he was incarcerated for an offense he has since been acquitted of. Perhaps they will take that into account when prosecuting.

I guess he forgot to apply for his "imprisonment" visa.
