TOKYO —
Insurer Alico Japan said Wednesday that as many as 230,000 policyholders could be affected by their credit card information leakage to unauthorized outsiders, fueling public concern over trustworthiness of the insurer. The Japanese arm of American International Group Inc said it has identified 32,359 such cases as of Wednesday, up from 18,184 announced earlier.
Company officials said they were able to identify that the leakage of credit card data came via an identification number given to an employee of a Chinese company in which Alico Japan had outsourced its system development operations. The revelation surfaced after the company found out that a card, which was not originally considered subject to information leakage, was recently used illegally, prompting it to reinvestigate the matter.
Although the person in question reportedly denied the allegation, Alico Japan is consulting with Chinese investigative authorities and is expected to file a criminal complaint possibly by the end of the year.
