fake ties, fake shoes, fake justice! I see Japan has learned something from all the scandals of late.

  • thepro at 04:37 PM JST - 21st July

In Japan if you're arrested they automatically believe your innocence is as fake as the shoes they give you. This new system is gonna be a real blast.

I personally don't think ANYBODY should be allowed to wear a clip-on tie. This is truly criminal.

Ah_so-real shoes might be used to make phone calls, a la Get Smart.

Or a bomb. Like the shoe bomber.

I'm not quite sure what the threat would be by allowing the accused to wear real shoes. I'm all for it, allowing scum to dress better than lawyers has worked to the defendant's advantage all over the world.

They're afraid they'll use the shoe laces to commit suicide if they had real shoes.

  • borscht at 06:47 AM JST - 22nd July

What's with the one leg between lawyer and defendant?

Wow, I had no clue the Japanese court system was in such bad shape. I guess I had some clues with the recent articles where people that would normally, under US laws, be the victims of the crimes being arrested and charged with crimes themselves in Japan. This also being brought to light really starts to shed even more light on the Japanese justice system. It really does need to be overhauled from the ground up. This is pretty horrible. I am glad some steps are being slowly taken, but I hope for the sake of innocent people everywhere that more is done.

There's a joke in here somewhere...?

I guess they've never thought of handcuffing the defendant and monitoring them during their breaks...This seems to work pretty damn good in all of the civilize western countries.... But that is if their end goal is really suicide prevention rather than making the poor defendant appear to be some low-life scum bag to help ensure a conviction.......

Japan needs to seriously look at the judicial system here. It is common sense that defendants should be able to look like normal people and dress professionally for trials. After all they are not convicts. They are accused. But in Japan that is pretty much the same thing.

Just fear being accused of a crime here. You will almost certainly be convicted because the system cares only about blame and not about justice.

I think the point is that they are taking a serious look at the judicial system. They have begun video recordings of interogations. They are in the process of introducing radical changes to the court system.

There may be much yet to be done, and it is not doubt, LONG overdue, but it is a huge under-taking and well-underway.

including ropes tied around the waists of defendants, when they enter courtrooms

what kind of medieval mickey mouse circus does Japan have here? barbaric!

  • ashishbhandiye at 04:18 PM JST - 22nd July

Is wearing tie and shoes fundamental right guaranteed to subjects by the Japanese constitution. why shouldthe defentants be allowed the priviledge of wearing shoes and tie in the court room. A person is criminal only when he is convicted by the competent court isn't it?

  • Zen_Builder at 04:39 PM JST - 22nd July

Not sure about the rope. Sounds like a myth to me.

Yes, there was Hojo-jutsu some time ago but honestly doubt it is used now vs shackles, etc.

As for the tie, shoe-laces, belt, etc rule it is common worldwide as you can hang yourself using them.

In short anything than you can use to kill yourself is not allowed WORLDWIDE.
