I think the guy was driving a company car -- probably on the way to work. In Japan, the moment you walk out of your house for the purpose of going to work, they assume some level of responsibility for your actions and well-being. In this case, the company will appeal any have the payout drastically lowered...

only 5 years for killing children in this day and age in japan where the birth rate is declining. for shame. how many did he kill?

  • Ah_so at 05:35 PM JST - 30th May

For the crime of inattention, 5 years is a fair scentence long, despite the horrific consequences. The driver was not a murderer.

outofmydepth: the number he killed is stated twice in the article, once in the headline.

He killed four and injured seventeen.

    He should be given life.

As for the money, no amount could ever replace my son or make me feel better about losing him.

Fair enough, the idiot should watch his driving, but at the same time, the level of road safety in Japan amongst school kids is appauling. They treat the roads as if there footpaths. Ive been tempted to knock down a few high school kids myself.

Didn't this guy have a very similar accident prior to this one. If I remember correctly, the cause was the same (driving while playing with his music player) but the outcome different (no injuries or no deaths). Five years is light for this %#'&$, hopefully this will help teach him a lesson.

ah so - you apparently do not have kids. 5 years is nothing compared to the lives of 4 he took and the 17 he scarred for life. like it or not, a car can become the same as a weapon and like with any weapon you must be trained and attentive. - hence driving school and licenses.

I cant ususually understand the concept of suicide, but if i did something like this, even accidental, i could never live with it....ever

    roughneck

The point of sueing someone who wronged you is not to GET the money, it is to make the person LOSE the money and spend their life paying it off so that they never forget what they have done.

if it were my kid killed I would take his money and then hurt him. no doubt. I would take the Earth from him, and heaven. Just hell for this guy.

    Sabiwabi:

Yes, he did... about three or four years before, but he didn't kill anyone at that time. Regardless, he still needs locking up for life...

    Capone:

does he actually have this money or did the court just pull a number outta their ass ?

No dumbass...they didn't pull a number out of their ass...that's how much the insurance company will have to pay out...the guy's insurance covers it! Get a clue next time!

    Romulus:

    Just hell for this guy.

    AMEN! Amen Brotha!

Fair enough? There's nothing 'fair' about morons who don't pay attention when driving. The reason why J-kids appear not to care about safety, is because they are not taught about it. They are brought up to believe there are no dangers in life. Also, the smaller the vehicle, the less liability. Hence, you're legs are the smallest possible vehicle, hence much less liability in an RTA! If you've been 'tempted to knock down a few school kids' yourself...then you should do the rest of us a favour and turn in your driving license IMMEDIATELY!!

Youdontknow: Well you truly dont!"fair enough" means I agree that this guy was in the wrong. You cant be serious about locking this guy up for life, as bad as it was its still an accident. Your comments about Japanese school kids not being taught about road dangers are wrong. Japanese society is obsessed with preaching safety. Somewhere down the line pedestrians and cyclists have come to realise that if they get hit by a car, its never theyre fault, so they just dont bother paying attention. Highschool kids are particularly arrogant when it comes to road safety, hence my comments.

BTW Moderator, how about a little consistency. Dumbass? I`ve had my posts edited for less.
