Drunk cop arrested after fleeing scene of car accident in Fukuoka

A 49-year-old police sergeant was arrested on Tuesday for negligent driving resulting in injury and failing to stop at the scene of an accident. Tatsuo Koga, a sergeant at Kokuraminami police station, allegedly drove his car on the wrong side of the road in Iizuka City on Monday night and collided with a car. He then walked away from the scene without checking on the condition of the female driver.

The accident happened just after 8 p.m. Monday on Route 200, when a white car believed to have been driven by Koga went the wrong way down the national road and collided with a car being driven by a woman in her 50s, who suffered head injuries in the impact. Koga was found about 200 meters away from the scene sitting on the side of the road. A passer-by told police he saw a man get out of the white car and walk away in the direction Koga was found, and when the car was confirmed to be registered in Koga’s name, he was arrested.

Police said Koga's breath smelled of alcohol. He admitted he had been drinking, but refused to take an alcohol breath test. A blood test conducted at 6.30 a.m. on Tuesday morning came up with a blood alcohol content of 0.127%, more than four times the legal limit of 0.03. Police are pursuing a charge of driving under the influence of alcohol.

Koga has denied he was the driver of the vehicle, however, and said that his car was stolen.

Koga’s arrest on Tuesday coincided with the third anniversary of a car accident in which a Fukuoka City public servant, driving under the influence of alcohol, smashed into an RV, causing it to plunge off a bridge and into the bay below, killing the three children inside.

I hope it goes to trial and he faces the lay jury. he would be screwed then. very badly screwed.

Bad cops, bad cops........ plus still cunning enough to say his car was stolen. he was chasing the car on foot, while drunk, when the thief crashed the car and ran off. So he walked uop the road, sat down and waited for the thief to return to the scene of the crime. Stiff talking to and back driving a copr car by the end of the year.

This will get swept under the carpet mighty quick

suspended sentence, in Fukuoka of all places. Unbelievable.

They should fire this guy, it was totally unacceptable conduct. What kind of law enforcement officer is this? Kick him out, he's a shame!

So, after he was arrested he refused a breathalyzer test? I didn't realize that was a choice when you're in custody. And then wait until 10 hours after the accident to do a blood test?? Traditional J-Cop efficiency!

Here we go again.....I can pretty much mark my calender by these clowns to mess up. I predict two screw ups a week!

Help me on this one. What would happen if I refused to take a breathalyzer test during those "random checks"? Is there an option?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Professor, yes! Your option is to be arrested and taken to the cop shop then blood tested and regardless of whether you test positive or negative you can expect to spend up to ten days in a cell while they figure what they are gonna charge you with, if anything. Either way, you will lose your job.

I'm not surprised, I recently tended to an injured passenger at a crash on the kosoku, while Japanese people in the thousands, didn't lift a finger. when the police arrived, rather than ask if anyone was ok, they just started interrogating the driver and passenger, while others roped off and photographed the scene. They made NO effort at first aid. None at all. I was deeply ashamed for Japanese people and the Japanese police.

The twiddledees and twiddledumbs of jcop land just keep on getting dumber and dumber

Koga was found about 200 meters away from the scene sitting

200 meters....? Come on now...? I dislike and distrust Jcops with best of them, but 200 meters might have been closest safe place to sit down.

Now for him denying that he was driving, this is another matter altogether.

Thank god no one was killed!

In any case, it's one less 'stupid' Jcop that will be stealing, taking pictures up HS girls skirts, groping women on a train, harassing salarymen / obasan's on their bikes or falling asleep in their station because they drank a drug laced tea provided by the person they were interrogating.... (LOL....)

Or maybe he'll just get promoted! He's now shown upper management that, "he's a player!"

What a douche bag! After prison I hope you enjoy your new career at Sunkus!

They should have tasered his drunk azz.

These stories no longer shock me...

This is a sign of the brutal treatment of J-cops that even other J-cops run away from it, knowing the treatment they will get.

Here we go again....

He was probably at a drinking party celebrating the previous fatal accident involving a drunk cop! Like any other public official he'll just deny it by saying "I was drunk and don't recall anything!"

Koga was found about 200 meters away. Koga has denied he was the driver of the vehicle, however, and said that his car was stolen. So they stole your car, and drove it 200 meters. I'm sure the judges will buy that.

I thought Philippine policemen are worse, now J-cops are climbing up to the charts.... ;-P

ha ha ha ... i've been shocked by these types of stories. those who claim to be righteous are usually the biggest perps.

Professor: Perhaps I shouldn't pass this on as in principle I'm for punishment of drink drivers and strong punishment too. But there is a way to avoid conviction and a friend of mine pulled it off years ago: When pulled over, he rolled up the windows and locked the doors. The cops cannot do a single thing. Yes, they can tow the car away but they cannot force entry. He stayed there twelve hours or so and then got out sober enough to avoid a charge. A true story ...

He will get off. The PD have already stated that he may be dismissed as a disciplinary measure, indicating that he probably will not be prosectured for this. We all know he did it. However, bottom line: no evidence that he was the driver; he has reported the car was stolen (after the event); it is not an offence to be inebriated per se. He knows that Jcops pressure confessions out of their suspects on otherwise circumstantial cases, and indicates that he won't break. He walks...

Nuts that is hysterical. I don't know why more people don't try it.

If this case was properly investigated, his cop buddies with whom he was drinking and allowed him to drive and the bartender (assuming he was drinking at an establishment) should also all be arrested.

His car was stolen by some drunk guy pretending to be a cop. He was sitting on the curb 200 meters away drinking out of distress over his stolen car, and debating whether or not to call the police....J-Cops...what can be done about the rising crime rate of J-Cops???
