"Kato was first arrested at the crime scene on S-U-S-P-I-C-I-O-N of attempted murder for stabbing a 24-year-old woman in the back."

    Is this sentence for real?

Why do the japanese cops waste any time at all with this dog and pony show by serving fresh warrants on suspects that they already have in custody? It seems like one of the more ridiculous things they do.

Yeah, this should be a no-brainer case. Just lock him up till its time for hime to swing...

They have to serve fresh warrants, theres this thing called the justice system and if its not followed properly lawyers could get this guy off.

  • SushiSake3 at 05:29 PM JST - 21st June

His lawyers will simply have to "prove" Kato is "insane" and he'll be off scot-free, like that guy who killed those kids and impaled their heads on poles outside the school.

He is apparently out. He murdered those kids only 7 years ago.

I don't think its a good idea to insult the victims or their respective families by referring to Kato as a 'suspect' in this incident. He committed his act on a busy street in front of countless witnesses for a sustained period of time. To call him a suspect is a joke, the man is THE killer beyond any reasonable doubt.

Why the quotes around "insane" SushiSake3? Does this sort of act strike you as the sort of thing a sane person does? Kato's comment that "I decided to stage the attack to make people on the Internet aware of my presence." sounds delusional to me - and I've worked with schizophrenics before.

Kato may or may not be mentally ill. Let the psychiatrists figure that out. But the mere assumption that the insanity defense is bogus is pretty annoying. Spend some time around a someone who is delusional and you'll see these people are truly unhinged from reality. Does that make them innocent? No, but the the concept of innocence and guilt that we apply to normally functioning people is inappropriate in the case of someone who is insane.

... has basically admitted to the allegations ...

    What do you mean "basically"?

  • moonbeams at 01:06 PM JST - 22nd June

I think it should be obvious by now that "suspicion" in English and "suspicion" as translated by Kyodo News are not the same word.

  • Fighton at 08:25 PM JST - 22nd June

This is the Japanese way. Always find extra time to waste when they already arrested the suspect.

  • Blue_Tiger at 11:57 PM JST - 22nd June

Money says that Kato will get off on an insanity plea.....either that, or get a seven-year-slap-on-the^wrist like Muto did for killing then dicing his sister.
