    by targeting an ordinary citizen

You really have to wonder what planet Japanese are living on....? A person is a person is a person is a person....

What kind of rationale we are dealing with....? I guess if he would have stabbed a Gaijin, it would have been, some how been less than, stabbing say a native or another gangster...?

Stabbing someone is usually considered and tried as "Attempted Murder." There is no differentiation between who they stabbed, circumstances can be a determining factor for guilt... Was it self defense...? But not who the victim was....

It's actually ludicrous and beyond explanation to think that the JN Judicial system can somehow differentiate, between people and actually recognize and sanction "Organized" Crime syndicates....

This is like saying, "Ok, we recognize your crime organization, it's ok for you to have and carry out illegal activities."

You really have to wonder what the mentality of the leaders within Japan is.... I don't think they're even ready to have their own country yet...

rjd-jr: You really do come from another planet. "A nice gesture" huh? Ever occur to you that this weasel wants less time in the pen? As for the "badge of honor" baloney, Japanese gangsters wear it from day one.

  • nutsagain at 11:06 AM JST - 4th October

rjd_jr Post Script: So I hope that if some moron stabs you in the bum you'll still have the equanimity to say; 'nice gesture' when he hands over some money to reduce jail time and of course, play up the image of Yakuza are at heart, just nice guys. Doubt it somehow...

    rji_jr,

    I hope you're being sarcastic.

    mindovermatter,

You're reading too much into the article. Ordinary person means "not a gangster/law enforcement personnel."

  • rjd_jr at 12:08 PM JST - 4th October

Not really moonbeams, I'm being as serious as a clam. When's the last time a blood, a crip, or an aryan brotherhood gang member ever apologized to their victim and offerend financial compensation. Look at the numbers of bodies being piled up from criminal gangs the world over, and no sense of closure to the victims. So it is indeed refreshing to see someone actually apologize for their crimes and offer financial compensation. This kind of thing doesn't happen outside of Japan.

But I absolutely agree with your assessment of some here way overanalyzing and nitpicking the article as an indictment of Jp society. Ridiculous.

  • Pukey2 at 01:49 PM JST - 4th October

Gor God's sake, rjd, why on earth do you always have to compare Jp to other nations and then say, oh it's not so bad in Japan (which I doubt you've visited)?

nitpicking the article as an indictment of Jp society. Ridiculous.

The only thing ridiculous are your posts - day in day out. This is an indictment - not of Japanese society but of the Japanese legal system. If you actually live in Japan or know anything (instead of pretending) then you'll know that a little 'sorry' always manages to get a few years off criminals' sentences.

    Gangsters are criminals. Period.

  • BBLeo at 02:59 PM JST - 4th October

Prosecutor is right with his demand for ten years, but I would give him twenty without early realize. It is time that judiciary start to act and protect the public.

  • moonbeams at 04:00 PM JST - 4th October

JR, if I were a gambling man, I would wager to say that this gangster was simply going through motions to save face and get a lighter sentence.

  • browny1 at 08:50 PM JST - 4th October

rjd - is a clam serious?

And ranking criminals of the nasty type (murdering ones and the like) according to the the manners they display (with those bowing being afforded high rankings) is a first to my humble reckoning.

A sorry (for the press)murderer is better than a mean murderer????

And as for the lack of victim recompense outside of Japan - can you substantiate that claim please. And for that matter inside Japan?

And re an indictment of Japanese society there is a little of substance to that. The manner in which organised criminals are tolerated by the law, lawmakers and much of the general populus - as shown by their passivity - creates a damning climate of inaction resulting in farcical "respectability " afforded to criminals. Just like you did.

6 years is pathetic. Repeat shoplifters have recieved such sentences.

  • BlackFlag at 10:20 PM JST - 4th October

It was a nice gesture for this gangster to apologize and offer compensation to the victim. His gesture is far more than the other gangsters and thugs around the world who not only never show any remorse, but are proud of the pain and suffering they cause as a 'badge of honor.'

enough with this nonsense! my god man, are you on comission? a thug is a thug, anywhere. he apologises now because he is caught and knows it will get him a light sentence. yeah real honourable.

The Yakuza controls Japans black economy very well. If the police arrested them there would be a hello of an explosion in violence and mayhem as other groups tried to step in and compete with each other. They are remarkably well behaved for a mafia. Even to apologize and offer compensation is unique. Hey, If a Yakuza hurt me and then offered some cash, Hell I got something for my trouble. The black economy will be here forever and so will the gangs. Thats life. No need to turn ones nose up at some Yen.

  • Suzu1 at 02:16 AM JST - 5th October

Rjd_jr - If the gangster had apologized and offered compensation to his victime BEFORE being arrested and charged with the crime then you might have had a point.
If you don't think criminals apologized to their victims outside of Japan, then you clearly have never looked into the matter. It happens all the time.

Any word on apprehension or sentencing for the gangsters who actually stabbed this elderly victim in Kagoshima?

  • projecthaberno at 06:03 PM JST - 5th October

He should have to pay, but that doesn't entitle him to a shorter sentence. The judge was bribed.
