disgusted with himself for failing to complain about it.

Then off yourself and leave your family grieving and alive.

Can someone please tell me where the "suicide" part come into this? Was the 2 year old and 3 week old part of the suicide pact? This thing reads like a bad soap opera script.

He strangled a 3 week old infant (let alone the others) and that wasn't cruel? What the hell is wrong with the legal system in Japan? If it was the judge's family he killed, the guy would be swinging at the end of a rope.

Japan defines "suicide" a little differently it would seem. But I'm sure he would have gotten the death penalty if the police had found 0.10 grams of marijuana on his person... although if he was staying chill by smoking weed, he probably wouldn't have committed murder in the first place. I wonder if he had been drinking around the time of the crime?

This is indeed bizarre. I'm not for the death penalty at all, so as long as 'life' really does mean 'life' here, it suits me. However, I AM surprised he didn't get the death penalty, given that usually murdering even two gets you capital punishment.

I would have thought one of them could fight off a 61 year old.

What a country...so if they weren't family, death penalty ?? So that's why so many Japanese kill their family members....

japan makes me so sad sometimes - just horrendously bad logic and reasoning to kill your entire family with your bare hands... so sad

The Japanese system of "Justice" is seriously warped when a judge can state "attempted family suicide" in the same sentence as mentioning the killing of a 3-week old child, her 2 year old brother and 3 others. It's just a moot point, but if the defendant had been found to have any foreign blood in him, he would have been hung, drawn and quartered already. May he rot painfully in prison until the end of his pathetic and cowardly existance.

japanese legal system knows not of life sentence. it is in fact sentence without limit, upper as well as lower which means he got as long as life but as short as any number of years depending on many factors. get your translation right or just delete my post and remedy the article as usual. but that's what 無期懲役 means, NO TERM PRISON SERVICE

  • michaelkane at 03:04 AM JST - 14th January

I am not aware of Japanese legal system, anyone knows if the sentence will affect any future similar cases?

  • francisco3269 at 03:50 AM JST - 14th January

How can you say that the japanese legal system is so messed up? What legel system are you comparing it to? Can you honestly say that the US legal system is much better?

  • francisco3269 at 04:51 AM JST - 14th January

the same would apply here in the states.

"and the court cannot recognize that the crime was well-planned and cruel." ... "He also strangled his daughter Kozue Fujii, 30, her son Kohei, 2, and her 3-week-old daughter Ayana"

Is the definition of being "cruel" in Japan on a totally different level as compared to the rest of the world or is it just me being too sensitive?

  • dennis0bauer at 03:35 PM JST - 14th January

defendant had been disgusted with himself for failing to complain about it

So he kills a 2 year old kid and a 3 week old daughter??? The (non-)think patterns of the japanese never stops to amaze me
