What the hell is a public prosecutor doing being in any way involved with interrogation anyway? It's the cops' job at this point to extract information from him and build a solid case. The prosecutor's role comes later.

incorrect, in japan the detectives work with the prosecutor to attain information until the prosecutor sees fit to lay charges. the suspect could visit the prosecutor many times within each period of detention, and in complicated cases such as this, detention can go on for months. the deck is always well stacked against the defendant with trials often becoming a formality, the defendant already having been proven guilty in the eyes of the prosecutor and the judge.

You have the right to remain silent!

technically correct, but in this culture silence implies guilt.

ichihashi knows that he will do himself no favors by talking, he knows his fate is all but sealed. what could he possibly say to make his situation any better?

This Ichihashi case has many twists and turns. Him being uncooperative is par of the course. Nice shame tactics used by the J-cops, like Ichihashi couldn't see that coming.

honey - WHERE are the sources that say he repeatedly raped her? So far (as far as i am aware) neither the police nor her family have confirmed she was raped or sexually assaulted?

Also, he has not yet been charged with her murder, i believe its still something like "disposal of a corpse? " So if he has not yet been charged, and found guilty, then surely he does still have at least some basic human rights?

Im not a fan girl ... just i believe in justice being done properly. Brutal police interrogation and/or violence, will do nothing except hinder the investigation, charges and conviction further.

Just speculating, but I would say that his sympathy barometer is dropping like a stone. If he is going to confess, he has to do it either today or tomorrow to get the "long weekend media coverage."

If he does not confess by then, the J-police will take off the kid gloves and stop interrogating. Then the kid will get hard time when he is eventually sentenced. They have good circumstantial evidence for this, plus his run from the police, which will look very bad to a judge. If they don't have enough to get him on murder one, then imposing the full sentence for abandoning a body, leaving the scene of a crime, etc. has got to add up.

he won't talk and he will not eat. We have to accept this. How long can he live without food?

LoveUSA - They're forcing him to take some kind of nutrition, so he'll probably last for months if not years. Can you believe that?

It is written on the internet that Ichihashi had been arrested before, when he was a university student. When he was under arrest then, he did not eat as well. This was written by somebody who claims she was his girfriend from Chiba university. Do not know if it is true...

If somebody doesn't eat they will eventually collapse. If in police custody they will then go to the hospital and get an IV tube. I don't think he can suicide by not eating.

If he would stop drinking, he would die sooner!! Come on Ichihashi, just say NO to water! THEN, you would really make a statement!

  • frontandcentre at 02:03 PM JST - 26th November

Surely telling this scum bag that he could be hanged is simply stating the obvious.

What sympathy did he have when he tortured, raped and murdered his victim?

I have none for him now, even though I object to the death penalty.
