Inspector, 2 ex-cops arrested over data leak in fatal medical malpractice case
TOKYO —
The Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department said at a news conference on Friday that an inspector and two former officers have been arrested over leaked data concerning an investigation into a malpractice case involving a woman who died after receiving liposuction at a cosmetic surgery clinic.
A police department official said that the three men arrested were Inspector Yoichi Shirotori, 58, and two former inspectors, Noriaki Nakamichi, 53, and Miyakazu Ishihara, 61, who had left the police department and were working at Shinagawa Cosmetic Surgery Group.
Police department spokesman Kenichi Sakurazawa said Shirotori, whose department investigates cases of professional negligence, is suspected of tipping off his former colleagues in advance about the police raids, as well as handing them documents on the investigation and advising them and the clinic how to deal with the investigation. He called Shirotori’s actions “abominable.”
According to an NHK report, a 70-year-old woman died after having the surgery at the Ikebukuro branch of the cosmetic surgery clinic in December 2009. Nakamichi and Ishihara landed jobs with the company in early 2010. Shirotori allegedly alerted them last summer that an investigation into the woman’s death had been ordered. Shirotori was in charge of the investigation, Sakurazawa said.
The 38-year-old surgeon who performed the liposuction was arrested in April on a charge of professional negligence resulting in death.

Am I missing something here if I ask why a Cosmetic surgery clinic would employ two former cops, apparently detectives no less? Am I being bitter, twisted and cynical if I say that a clinic employing a couple of older cops is likely to be involved in some dodgy business, and that any cops making this, ahem, unusual career move, might point to some sort of odd goings-on at this place? And dieing after liposuction? Less is definitely more here ... sigh ... would be nice to get a more meaningful story rather than these dribs and drabs that don't join up and will probably never be followed up on this site.

@asthecrow_flies - They might have been employed as "consultants", however being former detectives they can't claim that they didn't understand that receiving confidential information on an active investigation wasn't illegal. They clearly knew they were doing something wrong, and they should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.
