Don't know about racism, the guy might have just been well-dressed and an easy target for this nut job. At the same time, however, attacks on diplomats should always be condemned.
Well, don't know about the reasons behind it. Any excuses coming from Chinese politicians are dodgy at best. Still, at least the guy attacked wasn't badly hurt. Thats whats most important I think.
Premeditated to send a message? That's a bit of a stretch. Out of all possible explanations, the simplest one is usually the correct one. A nutter went after someone walking out of a convenience store. That's likely all that there is to it.
It seems that throughout East Asia... understand not Japan alone... knife wielding criminals are aloof... I recall several knife wielding incidents at Japan, then one at Shanghai... and now alas some anti-Japanese knife wielder who is Chinese and hates fascists Japanese neo-Nazis from World War 2.
Talk about anti-Japanese sentiment lasting for longer then 60 years at China... this is the equivalent of race relations between Caucasoids and Negroids at the United States of America.
Everybody needs to get over it, if it was not you then don't meddle in it. Hateful and discriminating feelings can fuel massive consequences for societies.

I sure hope to see condemnation from people here for this despicable act. Surely it may be racist in origin right?

Nowadays Beijng is extremely safe place to be. I doubt that this was a random act. there must be some premeditation to this to send a message.

Yeah, brain washed into believing Japanese are the cause for all their woes in the world.
This will blow over and will be forgotten very soon.
