All someone would have to do is knock on the door of his hotel room (anyone can take the lift to the guest floors), pretend they were hotel staff (easy to fool an elderly Japanese tourist) and that's it. I'm not trying to be detective or anything here, just pointing out that it would be relatively easy to do.

The Philippines can be very dangerous. Lovely country though...

I'm a Filipino in Japan and it's really sad to hear something like this. Other people are trying their best to promote tourism in the Philippines but these things will just scare tourists away. I don't think this has anything to do with the war unlike what elbudamexico said. The war is long over and the people have forgotten about it. Since the economy of the Philippines is not getting any better, I think this is has something to do with robbery. He probably refused to give money or the perpetrator was on drugs that he could do such a terrible crime. I'm very sorry to the family of the victim and I hope they solve the crime soon.

just check the average age of those japanese who were murdered in manila and you can make a little connection as what purpose or why they came to the islands. most of these victims were also murdered by fellow japanese while hiring a local assasin. the location where he was murdered shd also be considered. this is somehow similar to bangkok's khao san district. we have four japanese neighbors in my hometown in the philippines, and there is a slum area just a few meters towards the coastal district. none of them were murdered, and they live comfortably well. one of them talked to me last month when i was home and his main concern was not the security but his delayed pension.

This is 'one-time' news, had it been innocent J-tourist killing, J-news channels would be reporting 24hrs a day (for couple of days) and update almost every hour.

Yes but I'm sure they don't break into hotel rooms to stab a random individual Japanese man 8 times. Your comment is assinine as this article is about a crime.

sorry to hear the guy got killed. Definately let the wrong person into his hotel room. That could be anything from an imposter "hotel employee" to a call girl with friends. Can't say without more detals but the moral of the story is to be careful no matter what you're doing.

a fan knife eh? Is that what we call a butterfly knife in the US? I'm assuming so because the old Balisong is pretty common among street thugs and working girls in the Phillipines. Only two guesses: drug deal gone bad, prostitute gone bad.

the hotel should have a strict check up to those people who are going inside. stabbed right? but why did the hotel guard allows the person to enter the hotel while carrying deadly weapon?

More double standards by the Japanese media. The morning news report stated that this was the 10th Japanese national to be killed in the philippines this year... so where is the media hype and frenzy so commonly witnessed here when this happens in the USA ? Doesn't the mass media have an "obligation" to warn Japanese citizens of the dangers involved in traveling to the philippines ? How about a government warning ?

My guess is he didn't pay for his "room service". Or he pissed off the pimp.
elbudamexicano at 09:28 PM JST - 4th November
I do feel sorry for the old Japanese man being killed in Manila, but I think the Japanese news agencies are blowing it out of proportion.
