Maybe the manhole people did it. A lot of homeless kids live in manholes in Mongolia. Very sad.

Walking at 2 am alone. I won't even do it in Tokyo. My Japanese colleague said to me just now that J women often go out of control when they are abroad. They have lived by so many rules over here and once out of Japan, they behave weirdly....I don't know how far this is true.

It is hard to tell what is in a Japanese's mind, what more woman.

Of course it's a sad story, but they're not find anybody...
Of all the things they teach Japanese, basically treat and raise an entire population to behave like 12 year olds, they still don't get the one lesson that they really need to know...
Other countries are NOT Japan, while you can walk virtually any street at any time, alone here in Japan, you just can't do that any where in the world... Especially if you're a woman...
This is what I'll never understand...
It's a simple lesson...
Don't venture out alone after dark in foreign countries or in unfamiliar places...

I don't know about the current crime rate in Ulan Bator, but anyone who walks down its streets at 2 a.m on a night in February risks death by hypothermia.

This friend of hers should be investigated. Why did he let her go out at 2.00am? It is very strange issue and should be investigated promptly all the way. Is this just a pure robbery or is there something else that we could thin about?

Any sane woman would not rome the streets at 2am. Having said that, street sense in Japan is lacking to say the least

Sorry to hear of another japanese woman being murdered while engaging in risky behavior but why would you walk around in Mongolia at that hour??? Dumb and dumber!

Guys, she's been living there for 5 years. She knew better than you how safe/dangerous the place was. People get assassinated in every country you know, even in japan.

I just looked up the crime rate in Ulan Bator and appearantly muggings are rampant. She has been there for 5 years so maybe a little too complacent?
Patto at 04:38 PM JST - 9th February
Beelzebub and Majimekun have good points. Assuming she was dressed well enough to avoid hypothermia, it would have been hard to tell if she was a man or woman. If she had small stature, however, she may have presented an easy target. No word on how far she had to walk. My sympathies to her and her family.

What a pity! She was giving her knowledge to mongolian children & now got this.

Very sad. I've been there in winter and have done just that, walked home after midnight. Anyone there on the street at that hour is an easy target. UB is a Soviet era city which at 2am means just vast desolate streets and sprawling buildings. My friend and I had a close call. We were watching. We'd been warned. Some guys appeared some ways behind us and once in their line of sight that's it. It was a time consuming, drawn out cat and mouse game. And because of the scale it played out like insects in a rat's maze. Nobody ran. They could predict our moves. These guys were opportunists and drunk and we slipped away. If a group had decided to be organized - no contest. It makes no sense that this woman would be out at that hour. The cold isn't an issue.

If she would have showed more care, she would be alive today.

I lived in Mongolia many years ago and on my first night I went to a night club far from my hotel. I walked back and was frightened by what I saw, after dark UB descended into a kind of drunken hell-hole. I finally arrived at my hotel and the doors were bolted, locked solid, impenetrable. It was only about 10pm. They refused to open the doors to the hotel, I bashed on them for about 20 minutes. In the meantime a rabid dog bailed me up against the door, it ended up running away, but I was convinced it wanted to eat me. I consider myself to be brave, but I was the most scared I had ever been in my life. When they finally relented and let me in to the hotel, they scolded me and pointed out that the doors are locked after dark and they don't open them for anyone, I was lucky just this once. I learnt my lesson on the first night. Mongolia is beautiful, and the country folk are amongst the most hospitable people on earth, but the city descends into chaos after dark.
