It seems the "policeman" either knew the victim very well or met her recently and gleaned enough information to identify her to hotel staff before "arresting" her. How else could he have known her name and details, etc?

The only other possibility I can think of is that the hotel staff were involved - and provided the information and access to the "policeman". Or... they obtained her details from another source.

Also, the method of killing was violent and messy (kind of hot blooded); whereas the collection procedure was more systematic and planned (cold blooded). This seems really inconsistent.

Why does he come back to collect her two bags specifically (unless there is something specific that he is targetting)?

Did Sano's friend contacted local police that evening or the next day to discover the fate of her friend? She must have been missing presumed abducted for some time.

    Very tragic story.

Bali is wonderful and safe. More than likely it was not a Balinese that did the raping and murder.

Japanese should boycott Bali! If you "bite the hands (Japanese)" that feed you, take your crummy island and shove it up where the sun don't shine! RIP poor Japanese woman being dragged out of her hotel at 2m!

looks like the guy's motorcycle was found in the town named Padangbai (40km north east of Kuta).. it's a small port town and he might have already fled by ferry..

I don't really buy that some fake police just got her alone from the hotel and her friend was not aware of it , becasue if she is aware, she can go and accompany her friend or atleast call anybody that could help them , like embassy or etc... eventhough Rika was charged of something, she should've done something to reach her friend, or she's just really a useless vegetable friend . They need to tell more informations about her friend, unless something was really going on that they needed to go on seperate ways, because when you travel with somebody especially if just the 2 of you and you're both women , you are always together , especially with japanese women , it's very rare that they go seperate ways, I only hear those situations on clubs , when sometimes they have to go somewhere with somebody...I'm not blaming them , or not even judging them ,they have the right to have fun , but I think the report should be more complete.

Women, not just Japanese women must be careful, in every country! Not just Bali, but here in Japan, in the USA in every place, why? There are creeps, yes us men, who are nuts or just out of control.

I agree with elbudamexicano, boycott Bali! The police are so corrupt there it probably was a police officer. Anything can be done or covered up for money. To get your drivers you simply pay 400'000 rupiah and presto, they even put you if the front of the line!!

I used to live there and loved visiting before that. Poor Japanese are easy targets and get charged double for goods and services, even at public golf courses!

Rest in peace Rika Sano san, I hope they get the persons that di this horrible horrible act!!!

Softail: come on guys , why boycott Bali? imagine how many lives will be affected from the tourism business if people will listen to your solution, so the other people who has nothing to do with this crime needs to pay too??? when the british english teacher was killed in japan , did somoebody said Boycott japan, no body likes these crimes , even balinese people, the solution is simple, be careful!

Why are so many Japanese killed in all these islands that expoit Japanese tourists? As many have pointed above, the Japanese are considered to be floating in money. Japanese should feel safe in any country, especially in poor countries who get all sorts of aids and assistance from Japan. If the tourism is going to be affected if Japanese boycott these notorious cities, then the relevant governments should take serious steps to prevent crime in those cities.

womanforwoman: what?? notorious cities??? can i include japan to that since lots of foreigners and japanese people were killed here for no reasons too , security is for all people, not for rich Japanese national only, of course no government in all cities would want crimes, but its really hard to prevent , even here in Japan! see the news everyday? even their own country is not safe for themselves , crime can be avoided if we are alert and cautious but its almost impossible to stop , how about japanese crime victims in america? europe? can we boycott these countries also? i think boycotting a place is not the solution to these issues, crimes happen anywhere, nobody wants it , and its too immature ti think that it`s about vengeance...

Do these Japanese Parents ever teach their kids that the world is NOT safe like Japan... Single women cannot just go off wondering around, running the streets late at night in foreign countries... It's crazy, but you will read about a story like this every month of so... "Oh, I am a single Japanese women, I just want walk the streets of downtown L.A. all by myself at 3 am in the morning...!"

Total lack of common sense.... And stand by, you'll read about another one in a month or so, of some other free-spirited person, that wants to travel alone to Pakistan or Iraq, ... Insert place ______

  • noypikantoku at 07:11 PM JST - 1st October

because maybe theres a hidden story , that they dont want to tell.....

  • BuddhismTech at 02:03 AM JST - 3rd November

Many Japanese women from Japan come to Indonesia, Malaysia, and the southeast Asia with one purpose: sex and pleasure. They PAY men for sex. This is very true. Drugs had nothing with the murder. It was just a robbery.
