JR conductor arrested after assaulting high school girl in toilet near station in Shiga

SHIGA —

A JR West employee was arrested on Thursday after police received a call at about 7.45 a.m. that a man had taken a girl into the toilets outside Yasu station of the Tokkaido line in Shiga prefecture.

Police rushed to the scene and were able to catch the man about 100 meters away. He had a knife with a blade about 18 cm long in his bag.

Masashi Kaede, 26, a Kyoto City resident, is suspected of forcing an 18-year-old high school girl into the toilet, taking her underwear and injuring her left hand. Police quoted him as saying: “I threatened her with the knife and took her to the toilet where I intended to assault her. I was going to sell her underwear as I’ve got debts of several million yen.” Police are looking into also charging him with sexual assault.

Kaede worked at Yasu station from May 2006 to December 2007, and is currently a conductor on the Tokkaido line between Maibara station and Osaka station. He was not working on Thursday.

I love Japan, for its original news. When drug crimes, gang fights and revolutions happen in other countries, meanwhile here there are panties thieves trying to pay back their debts. It's such an original crime that can't happen anywhere else.

How did the word "rape" come to be replaced with "assault" in news articles, anyhow? Next thing you know, "gang rape" will be replaced by "mutual sexual assault" and eventually "sexual bullying", or some such thing. Any euphemism to hide the crime.
