Good law to pass, there is no real need for anybody to own weapons in their household, only an idiot thinks in this way, and it shows the diet are taking these murders seriously.

Double edged knives are very efficient stabbing weapons - banning them is a good decision.

There's nothing cool about a kitchen knife, and the type of knife they will ban is perfect for repeat stabbings. I think this is the correct move since there's no good reason to have one of these knives, and it could save a life, particularly in a spree killing situation where repeat use of a kitchen knife is not quite so easy.

That's b/c of strict anti-gun laws.
They're only trying to ban weapons that serve no practical purpose.

"They're only trying to ban weapons that serve no practical purpose."
ROT, if that were true, then why don't they repeal the gun-ban laws?
If someone brings a knife to a fight, I'm sure you want to be practical and bring a gun.

Guns are far more dangerous weapons than knives, why wouldn't you ban guns that aren't for sport? They are trying to keep all dangerous weapons out of the hands of the populace to prevent lethal crime.

Ossan: "One one hand it's true that the double bladed dagger design has no utilitarian use other than to stab a person. On the other hand you can accomplish the same stabbing feat with most knives including culinary knives. Or even a screwdriver. Probably one of those bans that have more value as a "feel good remedy" rather than a real practical one"
Agree with you 100% on this one... until you go off on the 'anti-J' rant, anyway. Don't know where you got that one.... but as I said, you're right about the first part; daggers are completely unnecessary, but you could stab anyone with just about anything if you had the inclination. What's more, it's as you say, nothing but a 'hey we passed a law... so we're DOING something' kind of thing.

Does that mean I have to surrender my bread knife? (Serrated on one side, straight on the other - for slicing meat.) And it's both long and heavy.
serindipity at 11:08 AM JST - 19th July
It is a good idea, but will it have any effect? If some wacko wants to go on a slashing spree he will do it regardless of having access to a double edged knife. I feel this is just like throwing stones into the ocean. It'll make a small wave that dissipates very quickly with virtually no effect at all. It would be more relevant to see the government address the general dissatisfaction within the society creating this epidemic of loonies.

EssInJay, for several years Korean cab drivers carried screw drivers wedged in their driver's sides windows.
When asked why, they'd say it kept the windows from rattlin'.
That was their story and they were stickin' to it.

Just the way to do, ban it! Boy, this sure helps a lot. Ban the knives but of course leave the truck alone.
Banning anything won't help. How about locating crazy people and put them away.
realist at 12:36 PM JST - 19th July
These dangerous weapons should be banned, and anyone caught with one or trying to sell one, should be jailed for a long time. Problem is - this is a big business in Japan, especially among the people with real power here - the Yakuza. Take a walk through the back streets of Ameyokoya in Ueno and witness the yakuza buying their lethal weapons there, along with knuckle dusters and other hideous weapons wich they use in their daily activities, while the J police seem to turn a blind eye. This really is a sick socitey.

There is also double edge knife in some kitchens...
I got me a frozen meat knife. long rectangular blade, one side small teeth one side big teeth. Extremely efficient. The problem is you can't use it without cutting yourself 5 to 10 times (the old push against the blade when it's hard to cut reflex). Even as a bread knife it was dangerous. I don't understand who found this design to be of any use...
Can they also ban Mitsubishi-Fuso trucks before their turn against people like in "Christine" or "the Duel"

If you outlaw these knives, then only outlaws will have them...food for thought...
Molenir at 06:04 AM JST - 20th July
Yeah, is just feel good nonsense. Will have no effect on criminals, only law abiding citizens will be forced to give up their knives. And it won't have any effect on stopping the occasional nut who goes on a rampage either. They'll just grab a screwdriver, a pair of scissors, or for that matter a regular kitchen knife.
Way to go J-Pols, do something, it doesn't matter if it will make a difference, you just have to look like you're doing something.
