Lawmaker assaulted by man during speech on street

House of Representatives lawmaker Hiroshi Hiraguchi suffered a slight injury in the neck Monday morning after he was assaulted by a man while making a speech on a street in Hatsukaichi, Hiroshima Prefecture, police said.

According to the investigation, the man stopped his car at a traffic signal, got out and assaulted Hiraguchi, 59, who was making a speech, seizing him by the collar around 7:25 a.m. Police found the two men wrestling and asked the assailant to come voluntarily to a police station for questioning, but he fled. Police later found him driving a car around 10 a.m., they said.
