Tim Blackman didn't exactly garner a lot of sympathy when he accepted 100,000 pounds in blood money from Obara.

But was it 'blood money'? Doubt it... Just do some simple arithmetic and tally the costs they've had to shell out with this nightmare. It's hardly a case of the father living the life of Riley on the handout. Rather, as Obara is bankrupt, grab something while it's still available.

    Rot in hell Obara

Why take money that would become a form of burying thre hatchet in Japanese society's eyes. Obara bought favorable consideration from the court from Tim Blackman. Sad case made sadder by the lust of money. Rot in hell Obara.

Again, I'll raise the point; how can a man whose finances have collapsed have 'bought favorable consideration'? Obara's pal put up the money. As I understand things from the press, Tim Blackman was advised by his legal counsel to 'take the money'.

To spout nonsense about 'blood money', 'favorable consideration' etc., reeks of moral posturing. Unlike Tokyo hotel fees, numerous return air tickets, this kind of talk is very cheap indeed.

"Sad case made sadder by the lust of money."

Would you favor a civil suit against Obara? The result would have been the same, only some lawyers would have got a cut and time would have been wasted.

Paying up does not negate Obara's criminal responsibility. That guy can never pay enough actually, not in pain nor money, nor a combination of the two.

"Why take money that would become a form of burying thre hatchet in Japanese society’s eyes."

To fund the campaign to bury Obara? There is no reason to ever honor a deal with the Devil. The Devil has no honor. $crew him to your heart's content.

Yes, the Japanese might regard the money as making things even. They would be wrong.

Anyway, I think Mr. Blackman is right. If they acquitted Obara after all this, if there is no new evidence, there is no point pursuing an appeal. The work of the Blackman family has put this guy away for other crimes. What can be done has been done with regard to Lucie's case. If he makes sure the life sentence sticks, it is all he can do.

If I were her dad I'd have taken the money too, to cover airfare and hotel bills, lost earnings. Remember that the dad had to come to Japan a lot in the beginning to get the Japanese cops to do anything.

    This is an old story!

This story was on JT several years ago, why has the SAME story been posted as new?

  • Desiderata1967 at 12:38 PM JST - 27th March

One other thing, and I think ALL members of Lucie's family should be ashamed of....How broken hearted would Lucie be right now knowing her family is bickering like this?

It is disgusting that foreign guest was killed by the wicked man. Even though we Japanese must suffer Foreign crime, the man who killed this woman mut be caught, and if Japanese are hiding, they are guilty and evil, i believe.

"Even though we Japanese must suffer"

I'm sure the majority of Japanese have never suffered from "Foreign crime".
