CHIBA —
A 48-year-old man under arrest in a separate case is highly likely the same person who withdrew cash from the bank account of a 21-year-old university student found slain at her burned-out apartment in Chiba Prefecture last month, police sources said Tuesday.
During questioning by investigators, the man, who was arrested on suspicion of attempted robbery and rape in the separate case, has suggested his involvement in the murder of the student, Yukari Ogino, a senior at the state-run Chiba University.
The police have conducted a three-dimensional image processing of the security camera footage of the man who withdrew the cash on Oct 21 at an automated teller machine, and the man’s face has many similarities to the face of the man under arrest, the sources said.
One investigative source has quoted the man in detention as saying that he did withdraw the cash.
The 3D image processing of the footage, done at the Chiba prefectural police’s crime lab, shows key similarities such as facial outline, bone structure and eyebrows between the man under arrest and the man in the footage.
Ogino was found dead with stab wounds to the neck and chest at her apartment in Matsudo, Chiba Prefecture, about 20 kilometers northeast of central Tokyo. The apartment was destroyed in a fire on Oct 22.
On Nov 2, the police released footage of the man who withdrew about 20,000 yen from Ogino’s bank account at the teller machine near JR Matsudo Station of the Joban Line of East Japan Railway Co.
The man was arrested on Nov 17 on suspicion of intruding into a house and attempting to steal money and to rape a woman in Chiba Prefecture.

Odd they haven't released his name yet. High connections or a change in policy? The latter, I think not.

How come security camera pictures are so awful. No one could be positively identified from one of them. "highly likely the same person","...suggested his involvement in the murder of the student" and "the man’s face has many similarities to the face of the man under arrest". Good Lord, is this the "proof" that can get one jailed and possibly executed in Japan?

You would think in the land of electronics, they could get real cameras and not mickey mouse cameras.

So this scumbag didn't only killed this young lady but also raped her, huh? Piece of garbage, should be hanged!

Another failed attempt?!

1) The man admits/hints under questioning that he was involved in the Chiba murder...this is much different user Kapuna from the thinking of your post.
2)Miyaratmosphere - Another failed attempt? No. He was (unfortunately and indeed if guilty) successful of the murder of the poor woman. Another failed attempt would have been if he had twice not done the deed... and yes, most criminals do not do only one crime so this leads to the famous saying that crime is a study in stupidity as we only catch criminals who make mistakes...
3) Choucreme - "it's great that they've got the guy before he does it again!!!"
Hopefully this guy is guilty and the parents of the slain woman can move closer to closure.

How about some "key similarities" with actual physical evidence, like finger prints and dna...? Or is this too much to ask...?
Sure looks like a human being wearing a mask, most possibly a male human being, over the age of 10, and less than 85 years of age.
Yea, you've sure got your man, you can go ahead and close that case!

ATM cameras don't last long - especially the ones that get the Sun shining directly into them for part of the day. If they replaced the camera everytime there was a degredation, our bank fees would be noticably higher to cover the expense of changing the cameras out every few weeks.
