Man arrested after driving car into pedestrians in Nagoya

NAGOYA —

A man was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after steering his car onto a pavement and hitting 12 pedestrians in Nagoya, police said Sunday.

The incident occurred mid-afternoon close to the city’s central station and the driver was caught on the spot, a police spokesman told AFP by telephone.

He did not give any other details including the driver’s identity. Media reports said 12 pedestrians were injured, one of them seriously

“I tried to kill people with my car,” the man told investigators, according to the Jiji Press news agency.

These people are incredibly lucky. It would normally only take a few seconds to run over these people.

“I tried to kill people with my car". Well, thanks. Because without your explanation, we would never have guessed. But if so, why didn't you try to kill yourself with your car first, and spare all the suffering and injury to innocent parties? Yet another repressed screw up...

I was walking in front of that place 2 hours before, I can't imagine how awful it was. I love Nagoya and its people. Nuts are everywhere unfortunately.

I can't help but be reminded of the Akihabara incident in 2008. I'm usually not in favor of the death penalty, but in cases like this, I don't see any reason not to execute the person. They have forfeited their right to life.

You're right, I've been living in Nagoya for 20 something years and accidents like this are a daily occurrence....be aware your neighbour might be an immigrant Nagoyan!

I totally agree with that. However, I think you forgot that to kill people, society has to give up its right to call itself civilized. It may turn out that he suffered from temporary insanity that can and could have been managed with drugs or therapy.

I think you forgot that to kill people, society has to give up its right to call itself civilized.

People say that, but I don't really buy that as a given. If they are killing people willy-nilly like in China, then that's uncivilized. Telling them of their execution a few hours beforehand, like Japan, is also uncivilized. But if there is a proper process, with proper checks and balances, and the person to be executed is treated in a humane manner, then I don't think that capital punishment is uncivilized.

It may turn out that he suffered from temporary insanity that can and could have been managed with drugs or therapy.

And what happens if he stops taking medication in the future, and decides to do it again? Or what if it was temporary, but could not be controlled with medication, how do we know he won't go temporarily insane again?

Some people are broken, defective models. This guy is one of them, whether it does turn out to be a mental issue or not.
