Man arrested after shooting himself with home-made gun in Ibaraki

IBARAKI —

A 20 year-old man was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of possessing a hand-made gun, in violation of the Swords and Firearms Control Law and laws prohibiting the manufacture of weapons. Police said the unemployed man from Moriya City misfired the weapon and seriously injured himself, and was arrested after his release from hospital.
The gun was made from a commercially available iron rod, 17 centimeters long and with a diameter of roughly 3 centimeters, in which he put gunpowder. The man is reported to have said that he was interested in guns and made the weapon after seeing a show on TV about how they work. He told police he mistook the front end of his weapon for the back, and ended up shooting himself.
According to police, the man had the gun with him when he was under the Joban Expressway in Moriya City on the evening of May 2.

Thank god this fool shot himself with this home-made gun rather than shooting innocent people with it. This fool sounds like a real looser! Out of work so he is wasting his time making guns? GO FIND A JOB LOOSER!

A regular Einstein? This guy is one very lucky dude. Should have thought a bit about weapons handling as well. 3cm as a bore is rather dangerous, considering that most weapons these days are calculated in millimeters, 7.62 or 5.56. I also wonder how much gunpowder he put in the barrel. A decent wad of powder would have made any projectile coming out of the barrel do so at some speed. Depending on the volume of powder, he might have managed to shatter his shoulder even if he had the weapon pointing the right way.

With regard to gunpowder, it is not that hard to make. All you need is.....

Thank you fatloser. While many here think this guy is an idiot, how many of them could even actually make the gun? Sorry, but the guy is one up on most of us here. And I am not sorry if I busted anybody's little bubble of smugness. Some people really need to get some humility.

making a gun doesnt make him a genius, just someone with internet access and too much free time. making a gun and then accidentally shooting himself because he didnt attach a handle certainly doesnt make him a genius. In fact I'd say I was definately one up on this guy because I was smart enough not to want to make a gun and have not spent the past week in hospital and a police cell. my bubble of smugness is impenetrable in this case.
