Slightly off-the-wall news. More to this than meets the eye, or just another day in the life?

If the door is unlocked, how is this break-in? Un-announced seems like a better term.

    "He will learn his lesson."

Yeah. Don't break into the house of a police officer! An important lesson.

    Attempted to break in?

Firstly, he didn't break into a locked home. Secondly, he attempted nothing other than possible burglary.

Finally, it is a home intrusion.

The cop returned to his hometown. OK. ... where he spotted the intruder (in his hometown?) ... on the first floor??? (= ground floor?) How could he see him? Inside or outside?

The door was unlocked. The bloke attempted to break in, but he was (?) already inside?

None of this hangs together in any meaningful way...
