Man arrested after woman found strangled to death in apartment

Police in Tachikawa, Tokyo, said Saturday they have arrested a 26-year-old man on suspicion of killing a 26-year-old woman who was found strangled to death in her apartment.

Police said the suspect, Yuki Oi, a company employee, has admitted to the charge and quoted him as saying he was angry at the victim, Mayuko Asai, for telling his wife on the messaging app LINE that they had been having an affair for the past two years and that they should talk, Fuji TV reported. Police said Asai and Oi's wife were acquaintances.

Asai, a part-time worker, was found at around 6:30 p.m. Thursday in her third-floor apartment.

Police found Asai was lying face-up on her bed and had been strangled with an electric cord that was wound around her neck. One end of the cord was tied around the bed leg.

On Thursday afternoon, police said that Oi and his wife visited Asai to discuss the affair. After Oi's wife left, Oi said he then lost his temper and strangled Asai, police said.

At around 5 p.m., Oi's wife tried to phone Asai but couldn't reach her, so she contacted police. Then she and her husband went to the police station where he was quoted as saying he attacked Asai but denied intending to kill her, police said.

Police said Asai lived with her mother, her younger sister and her (Asai's) three-year-old daughter, who were not home on Thursday.

It's entirely possible that she did this to herself

Asai’s mother said there was nothing unusual about her daughter’s mood when the family went out in the afternoon.

People who've actually decided to commit suicide (not those for whom it is just a "cry for help" gesture) often are happy since they feel all their problems are over

Poor kid to be left with this..

You can't kill yourself by tying a cord around a bed leg can you?

You don't have to be suspended to "hang" yourself. In this situation, she would just have had to roll to one side until she passed out

"Police said Asai was lying face-up on her bed and had been strangled with an electric cord that was wound around her neck. One end of the cord was tied around the bed leg."

However police said they have not ruled out suicide. This suicide is way too complicated!

Nothing unusual, except that she did not go out with her sister, her mother and her three year-old daughter. What family trip did the others go on that this woman stayed at home for?

Not enough information to make any judgement one way or the other.

The 20 year old being held might have just been the last unlucky guy to talk to or meet her and have nothing to do with it, or there might be something more sinister behind it.

Too early to say either way.

Yeah, apparently it's an affair gone very wrong. No idea what this guy was thinking by contacting the police. Did he really believe that he would get away with this?
